Redraif's New PMD seat covers from Hawk's

We finished up recovering a set of PMD seats (not the nice ones we bought a year or so ago from Zephyr; they're going in her 82 TA) for Redraif's car last week, and they look awesome!

They're the "Hampton vinyl" covers sold by Hawks Third Gen. They look and feel a lot like leather, without the high cost. She had them custom made in red and black (red centers, black bolsters, red piping), and they fit great and go with the car really well. We took pictures last weekend, and should be able to post them in the next couple days.

Hawks is offering these covers for 3rd and 4th gen style seats (PMD, Recaro, standard, etc), in a variety of stock and custom colors. They also have cloth covers, too. Give Bruce a call at 864-855-2694 if you're interested.

BTW, a few interesting notes about PMD seats. As most of you know, PMDs were only available in 1982. We thought they only came in Firebirds, but on a junkyard excursion we found a near flawless set in, of all things, a 1982 Pontiac 6000!!! They apparently came in them too, since the upholstery matched , and it didn't have a provision for a fold down seat. The seat tracks were different (higher), too, but that is no big deal. We swapped on the folding mechanism from a ratty (literally!) set of PMDs we had (had to drill a couple holes in the seatback), though ones from a standard seat might work too, along with the tracks . You can use the nonpower tracks from any thirdgen; the power ones (at least original 82 power tracks) will hit the seatbelt retractor in the rocker area. This isn't an issue on 82s because they don't have a setbelt retractor for the front seats.

BTW the gray interior panels with black naugasoft inserts are being replaced with black panels with red Hampton vinyl inserts to match the seatcovers. The material is still on order though.

Thanks guys! Shannon (Redraif) never ceases to amaze me...her first attempt at covering seats, and they came out great!

Wow, they're really something! Superb.

Since you guys have some knowledge on these seats now, I've been wondering. Is it possible to take a PMD seat that isn't powered and swap just the backrest with that of a powered seat, thus keeping the powered seat and tray, but having a PMD backrest on it? I mean, aren't PMD seat bottoms and stock seat bottoms exactly the same?

Funny, I didn't really like them either, at first...my main exposure to them was Knight Rider, and I hate tan interiors, so maybe that was why. The car looked good with the old PMDS (factory black cloth ones from Zeper's friends' car), and they started growing on me then, but the new ones fit the car better. Considering all the red accents in the car, they didn't "fit" the cars interior scheme...they just weren't custom enough. The seats sort of tied everything together and made it work better. Once the door panels and rear cargo panels are replaced with the black/red, it should look better still.

BTW if you or anyone else is interested in a swap to PMD seats, I just picked up a nice set yesterday. They're "doo doo" brown, but the covers are near flawless (one had a small cig burn in it) and the foam is perfect. They look like new seats. If you could live with Brown, they could be used as is. They don't have the "PMD" emblems, and don't have F-body seat tracks (they came out of a Grand Prix, but are otherwise made exactly like Firebird ones), but I could provide a set if needed. Just PM me if you're interested. I'll try to get some pics posted in the next few days.

If I can talk her into it; we have missed a lot of shows this year between mechanical upgrades and her red Scorcher being on NBO for over a month. We looked for you at NOPI. When is the Gainesville show?

While it might fit, it probably wouldn't look right. The PMDs have a more pillowy feel than the standard seats, and honestly, I think they're more comfortable, esp over a long trip. You don't have to give up your power seats though, I don't believe. The later power seat tracks are made to clear the seat belt retractor, and to my knowldege all GM seats have the same "pattern" for the seat tracks. So, even though our 82 power seat track wouldn't work in an 87 car, a later one should work fine. All this stuff is interchangable pretty much. Power can be added to a non-power seat, and vice versa.

Thanks, hopefully the rearend swap will go well (changing to a 3.73 disc rear) and we'll be able to make it. I've been to Gainesville a few times before for Fun Ford events.

BTW, if anyone's interested, my other set of PMDs are on Ebay now, # 2435739309

I went to the Matthews concert in Atlanta that weekend, but due to scheduling conflicts(again this year)......I didn't make it to NOPI......

Do you have any exterior photos?

I love the interior. I was going to go back the original light grey and charcoal cloth on mine but was thinking about something different. I painted it ('85 T/A) about 15 years ago and the paint is shot. I went all red and am going to re-do it soon. It has red spoilers, red handles, door lock, t-top bars, etc. Looks really clean. I had the idea to incorporate some red into the interior on seats but never thought about what you did. Great job!
