When idleing, my car surges, but not the RPMs, just the voltage. My volt meter drops below 11 and then shoots up to around 14 then drops again and goes right back up. This causes the headlights and dash lights to fluctuate dim to normal, dim to normal. Is this a problem with my alternator?

Are your fans engaging when the surging occurs?

might want to somehow get your alternator tested, to me it sounds like the voltage regualtor, thats usually built in the alternator..

Well, then I second what Md said about getting the alt checked. Most places will do it for free. Take it out and drop by an auto parts store and have them check it. Also, if you do get a new one..spend the extra few dollars for the lifetime warranty. Our cars are notorious for killing alternators.
This is my 3rd alternator in the past 6 months!
But I did get the lifetime warranty with it so its all good. Schucks will even test it in the car.

How did you make out with this problem? My IROC-Z does EXACTLY the same thing, up and down voltage, lights, etc. I am selling the car, but I still would like to take care of it first. Seems like altenator to me, lemme know if you got anywhere with your problem. Thanks man.
Haven't gotten it checked yet, I'll keep ya posted.
