taking off brake booster/master cylinder help

someone told me that once i take the master cylinder off the brake booster, its going to be a hell of a mess to put back together.. is this true? i really need to get my brake booster off so i can polish it up.. it looks terrible. if i did get the master off, how hard is it to get the booster off?

and how exactly does the booster work anyways? never really knew that.

Master cylinder removal is a piece of cake for me. It's only 4 or 6 lines and 2 bolts that hold it on. I don't know about the booster, I haven't touched it.

whole assembly unbolts from the firewall from the inside with 4 bolts, it's above the steering column, but pretty easy to get to with some long extensions. If i hadn't used extensions, i probally would have had to take the whole dash out to get to it, but it's pretty easy....just those 4 bolts, whatever lines run to it, and the pin that connects it to the brake pedal...

It won't go "everywhere" but it will obviously leak a bit. Just go slow and use a decent amount of shop rags to keep the fluid off your paint...the stuff will eat right through it. Have a small bucket or drain pan to throw it in when you take it off. I didn't have a lot of fluid going all over the place when I switched mine. Leave the cover on the M/C and the seal will help to keep the fluid in there.

What are you trying to do?

If you want to remove the booster, you don't have to futz with all the lines on the MC; just take the 2 nuts off and pull it out of the way.

Then to get the booster off, there's 4 nuts in the interior of the car, in a circle around the linkage that the brake pedal hooks to. It's a no-brainer (which means that I'm uniquely qualified to deal with it).

Nothing will screw up, or fall apart, or squirt out. Except a little vacuum. Be careful with that, it's real dangerous stuff, it has been conclusively proven that laboratory rats can survive for only a very few seconds in a vacuum-enriched atmosphere. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean up any that leaks out.

Screw a whole bunch of work. I don't know about you, but I hate work.

If there is any fluid between the master cylinder and the booster then you have a problem with a bad master cylinder. Take the 2 nuts off and it will easily pull away from the booster- dont worry, there are no parts or springs that will fly out of there. Its a really simple and easy job.

Taking the booster out? now thats a job I don't like.

well all i wanted to do was polish it.. or just get the rust off and paint it. so if i even got the master cylinder off it would still make the job ten times easier. and will i have to bleed the brakes when im done?

Agood is right. You don't have to remove the MC, just take off the 2 nuts that hold it to the booster.

Nothing will spew out. No fluid will leak. No seals will come out. You won't have to bleed the brakes. These are obviously people who have never done it.

It takes me about 30 minutes to change the booster in my car; that's mostly because it's a 5-speed, and the brackets that go between the clutch & brake pedal pivot and the clutch MC get in the way. In an auto car it would probably take less then 15 minutes.

Just take it out and have your way with it.

OH!!! I thought you were pulling the prop valve off...

Hell no don't pay a mechanic to do it. You want to pay someone to take out 6 nuts/bolts, pull a part off, and reinstall? Seems like a waste to me.

Well said....Good luck.
