I ordered some 2½ straight pipe & some 90° bends from JCWhitney tuesday last week and am waiting... I should've spent the extra $4 to have it shipped 3day instead of thier standard shipping (ground, usps ). The mufflers will be made by me to fit in the rear like what a vette has. Weather the mufflers will sound good or not doesn't really matter to me... I'll have $0 invested in making them. I made a 3" temp. muffler awhile back for the bird and it didn't sound all that bad (a little overly loud for my taste but...) so I figure why not make another pair and see what happens.

89Irocz.. I wish the underside of my car was as clean as the picture makes it look as well

Yea.. I decided instead of the normal, sit on my duff & relax sunday, I'd go ahead an modify my x-member for if my exhaust tubing ever gets here (damm USPS.. I would've driven to JCWhitney in like 4hrs & picked it up myself if I knew it was going to take this friggin long.. ).

The extra clearance appears to give enough room to use up to 3" pipe on both side and not drop below the factory hanger off the tail of the trans. A heat shield will have to be made for the fuel lines just to be on the safe side.

I think I'm going to add some small gussets around the trans mount just for safety sake as well.. I trust my welding but, I'm no engineer and.... you never know..

Here's a couple other pics..

bluegrassz.. maybe, just maybe.. my exhaust tube will arive one of these damm days theis week (month.. year.. ). I could have walked to JCWhitney & picked the **** up by now (I'd have to hitch-hike back tho lol )... USPS sux!

racereddy.. I really didn't give any though to making something like this to sell really. I just went out in my garage sunday and choped up the x-member and made using a little 2"x1/8" flat stock in preperation for my exhaust tubing that is apparently never getting here.

I suppose I could make them to sell but, I don't really have time to go getting x-members out of junkyards to make & sell them so, even if I wanted to, I would take me quite some time to make them.
I have no clue if this would fit on a automatic car since mine is a 5speed. I know how the mount is on my 84 camaro auto. seems to have a differnt way of mounting the trans than my bird.
I also do not house most of the needed things to 'mass produce' something like this.
Right now I'd just like to know where f- my tubing is.... Maybe the USPS thinks I'm trying to make pipe bombs or something...

What if I sent you a cross member and sent you digital pictures of how the tranny is mounted in there right now. I could put the @$$ end of the car up high and pull out the flood light and snap some pictures off with my friends mavica. I have absolutely no idea of how to weld and that is why I am asking you.

racereddy.. if you'd want to take some pics of you trans mount/member and email them to me for comparison, I'll think about it.

Wonder of all wonders today as well.. My straight pipe showed up but somehow... the angle pieces didn't seem to find their way yet go figure...

Nice job Deadbird!

If you plan to go over the axle on both sides you may want to relocate the brake line splitter and cut off the mounting pad that held it - route the e-brake cable under the panhard rod and modify or remove the panhard support rod- and mount bullets on both sides of the tank - 0.02- but you probably got the rest figured

good luck either way

Is that one of those "Ultimate" rear-end covers?

Are those pipes tucked up as far as they can go? Also how close does the left pipe come to the torque arm? I was thinking of making one too. Right now my dual 2.5" exhaust goes above the x-member. I put in washers to lower it but it's still a really tight fit.

My friend is supposed to come over today so that I can show him how to crimp cat5 (586-b mind you). I need to call him and tell him to bring his mavic with him so I can take pictures of everything. I'll try to take angled shots and straight shots of the car. I dont have the pics today mabye tomorrow.

You know as I spend more time looking at the pics of your ride deadbird, I had an epiphany. The crossmember almost sits on top of the tranny oil pan. I dont think its gonna be possible. I keep looking at the pics and I do see all the differences between and auto and 5 speed. DAMN that x-member looks f-ing sweet.

Kenn.. I haven't really planned that part out just yet (I mainly build/make final decisions as I go) but, the only real thing I do see in the way is the rubber brake line on the rear. I changed my car over to disc in the rear and bought new e-lines so that's actually in the clear. If I route the pipe as I'm thinking I want it.. I should be able to squek by the brace w/o having to do anything to it (knock on wood). Your tips & compliment are noted though.. thanks.

Mark... I have the generic Summit version of the 'ultimate' rear cover.. a very nice piece though and it looks pretty cool

Race... yea.. the width of the auto tranny really didn't cross my mind since I've only been under my camaro 2 times since I've owned it. If it weren't raining I'd go lok under the camaro just out of curiousity of how tight it is under there.

CheezX.. I clamped the pipe to the x-member and the back is laying up against the rear. Since the rear is off the ground the pipe is really close to the torque arm, once the car is sitting on the ground with wieght, the arm won't be so close. As it fits right now though, even if I were to ramp the car, the arm will not hit the pipe. I don't see me ever doing that so I don't think I'll have to worry about that. I will also cut a notch or 2 in the pipe to angle it slightly up oce it is past the drivers seat for a little extra ground clearance. I just got the straight pipe yesterday (I guess the angles are in limbo somewhere at the post office )and clamped it up for the hell of to see how well it's going to fit and I'm liking it so far.

If and when you get done with your car, it will be one beautiful piece of work. Everything you have done to it. How much longer? That is a great idea for a dual exhaust. Now why couldn't gm thing of that. Please post picks when done.

88Bravo.. thank you.. as far as done done... sheesh... probably never. I'd like to think I'll have it mostly done by next spring but, I'm not in any real big hurry either. I've still got lots of crap to buy and body work to do but, exhaust is of main concern since I do try to drive it at least once every week or 2 and open headers are extremely annoying to listen to.

I got my 90°s friday and 2 of them are smashed.. imagine that..

Anywyas... I had a little over an hour to play today so I cut & fit a few pieces... so far so good...

looks good so far. any plans for a h or x-pipe?

I started working on a new panhard brace that goes under the panhard bar then back up to the frame. now there's enough space for the left pipe to go over the axle then to the mufflers.

Nice work Deadbird!! What kind of mufflers are you going to run? Are you going to run any cats? I friend of mine ran 3 in. duals on his 91 Z-28, he used single chamber flowmaster mufflers (the little ones) and it it LOUD. But he also has a 600hp carb'd 406ci. Your exhaust has a little more ground clearance than his which is a good thing!! Also, this is going to sound like a dumb question, but how do you post pics exactly? I have a pretty interesting exhaust myself! As soon as I scan them in and ya'll tell me how to put them on here, I'll post them.

How hard is that to do? Is it possible while still on the car? How wide and far in is it cut?
