Clutch w/o springs?

For my T56, I bought the GM flywheel PN 14088646, which is the light weight one. I also bought a stock clutch disc and pressure plate, but the disc won't fit in the flywheel. The "Engine Side" of the disc has the springs on it, and the flywheel is too shallow for the disc to fit all the way down.

SO, what clutch/pressure plate can I get to fit on this flywheel. I assume it will have to be springless, which is OK with me.

Um...that doesn't sound right. I've done a few clutches in T56 cars, including a Spec stage IV with a unsprung disc. It sounds like you have the wrong flywheel or something. I'm not familiar with that PN flywheel, but i have a t5 personally, so that's what i'm more familiar with. IMO, a clutch with a unspring hub is to uncivilized to drive on the street, even just to and from the track. We switched to a stage III clutch with the same material and a spring hub and it was more civilized with almost no reduction in ET or 60' time.

Well, a bunch of people use this flywheel, so I don't know what's going on.

Here's what happens.

When I put the side of the clutch reading "engine side" towards the flywheel, the clutch material isn't even close to touching the flywheel. When I put the side reading "engine side" away from the flywheel, the clutch material touches the flywheel, but the pressure plate is about 1/2 inch away - the inner splines are touching the inner part of the disc.

Any more input?

Thanks:hail:

The T56 disc is basically the same as a T5 disc but the splines are tapered a tiny bit so the input slides in. I may be wrong but the T56 disc may be built on the same parts as the T5 disc, so the "engine side" label may be incorrect.

If that's not it, then you're trying to run a T56 disc with a T5 flywheel which ain't gonna work.

Looked at the PN & I was right. You're trying to run a T56 disc with a T5 flywheel. The T56 has a deeper dish in the middle; that's what you need.

edit: Look familiar?

What about this guy, though?

Monte Carlo w/ T56

He's running a aftermarket T56 with the same flywheel

Bob is running the aftermarket T56. I know him personally. The aftermarket T56 *as delivered* bolts up to a T5 bellhousing and his setup is irrelevant to you if you're using a 93-97 T56.

Now, which clutch disc and pressure plate are you trying to use? You left us high & dry on details in your first post.

I am trying to use the RAM LT1 stock replacement clutch, as it holds more than I will ever need. The clutch can be returned if need be.

If you could just give me a part number for the flywheel that would work, I couldn't thank you enough. I will just use the RAM clutch I have.

The reason I got this flywheel is because I wanted a lightweight one, but now I can't return it to gmpartsdirect.com because it was a special order. Oh well, that's what ebay is for.

I just want to get a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate that work so I can finish this project.

Thanks for your help:hail:
