Well after a few months sitting in class I finally got it back home. I didn't paint the top side because I'm planning on bringing the whole car into class next year to do the bodywork and a full paint job.

This was a pretty damn easy mod really. I don't know why there is only one other person that I know of (LBSZ28BLOWN) who has done this.

-Cut the holes in the hood slighty behind where the rad would be underneith it. You make the holes here so if water gets on the hood it won't drip on the engine.
-Then cut the holes in the blisters about a few millimeters short of where you the edge then sand and file it down so you don't accidently cut into the rest of the blister. (I did this by mistake but not badly enoguh to matter)
-I then got some mesh for the holes in the blisters so no larger crap will not fall into the engine bay.

And thats about it really. And now for the pics....

So whats it do? I guess it could pull hot air out of the engine area....ummm but thats all I can see it doing.

Yeah they serve as heat extractors. GM made functional ones on some of the Grand Prix GTP's (not the new ones though)

I'll get some pics of it with the blisters on the hood tomorrow

 

i thoroughly love that for the fact that now when someone goes "those things on your hood what are they for" you dont have to say "oh theyre just for show" you can tell em that they serve a function.

 

 

I just did the same thing to my car. I put the holes in the hood in the same spot. The only thing I did different was I put the screen over the holes in the hood also. I have a picture if someone can post.

i have the same hood but mine came with some stock louvers

 

They were stock in 91 and 92 on Z28's and with my car being a 91 Z28, you can probably figure out where they came from

Would that be possible to implement that kinda mod for a Z28 with "gills"? Gills like you'd see on say '88 Iroc. I was thinking of doing that, but what are the risks of some water getting inside the engine bay? I mean if you drive in rainy conditions, wouldn't that be the getting some water inside the bay through the bottom anyway?

 

what did you guys use to cut the bisters? I have been thinking of doing this for some time but was nervous cutting into them!

 

For the amount of work involved, I really am skeptical that you're going to see much in the way of any improvement.

The location of the holes in the hood (on the slope of the hood) means that any water collecting there will pour into the hood/engine doesnt it?

 

There's nothing wrong with water in the engine bay, especially up front. The holes are also located just behind the radiator, according to JimmyG, so most of the water going in is going to fall straight down between the radiator and the pulleys, I imagine.

 

Very nice work. I like that a lot. It looks real good. Funny, I actually opted to go with the louvers on my 91 rather than the blisters... This mod is giving me second thoughts...

 

i've always hated the way that the louvers/blisters on irocs and z's have been non functional. good job..

 

If those second thoughts don't get too serious, how about selling your blisters? When I took my louvers off to paint, over half the studs broke off the bottom. The 3m double sided tape seems to be working well, but I REALLY like the blister look. ALSO,

DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF ANY AFTERMARKET COMPANIES ARE MAKING THE HOOD BLISTERS?

Looks great!! But I'm too cheap to buy those hood blisters, around $100 for the set!! Madness!! I'll run mine with the old crappy looking louvers hahahaha. But yeah the cutout idea is great. Will probably also help extract heat from the engine bay.

 

LOL The blisters I had have been gone a long time. If you really want aftermarket ones try Hawks or F-Body Motorsports. As Crazy said. They arent cheap.

 

The reason I say aftermarket is b/c it isn't terribly important to me that they look exact to factory specs. Do you know what GM charges for them? I once had someone tell me they only sold it as the whole hood. If that is the truth....... It is a shame they are so expensive cause they look sooooo good.

Aren't you worried water will get on things like your alternator and other electronics? I bet the car will shutoff when it rains. And standing water in the engine bay will cause rust. Otherwise seems awesome.

Aren't those vallid concerns? When you're at speed in the rain water will be going everywhere. If I did something like that I would rig up a switch to something that would block the holes when it rains.

 

water gets under the hood all the time,,,anytime your drive in the rain you soak the engine with water...it spashes up from the tires and comes thru the grill and rad. You wont have a problem with rust or atleast any more of a rust problem,,, the engine bay should be most protected from rust as its usually dry and sometimes well oiled.

I think its a great idea and he shouldnt have any problems. Look at hoods or engine compartments in the past that where open......
toyota mr2, Pontiac fiero....and dont forget about the old hodroders trick of cutting in custom louvers.

i was looking at the pic of the hood and started thinking is that a standard IROC hood with the bisters on it or is that a hood specific for the blisters?

i only ask cuz i bought a standard flat hood and blister to put on it..

 

The louvered hood and the blistered hood are identical excluding of course the louvers and blisters, how do you plan on attaching the blisters to that flat hood and making them look right?

 

well i bought the fiberglass aftermarket blister from hawk or some company like that cant remember the name but i figured the standard flat hood would work the underside of the hood has the outline of an IROC hood. but as i said i just noticed the IROC hood has those side lips to sort of wrap up the side where the louvers are.

this would help, does anyone have a pic of a blister hood without the blisters?

i really NEED (not want) a fiberglass hood but love the z28 blisters. How do these look on flat hoods? Has anyone done this? How did u mount them?

 

I have them on my 91 RS. They aren't quite as nice as stock but the do work, and you can forget about using that outline under the flat hood because they are no where close to following the outline. Its just a lot of measuring and remeasuring. And of course, as with any fiberglass product, they require some bodywork.

 

So those are closed where the hole would be on the real blisters?

 

did the same thing to my hood blisters not to long ago, I made the cut in the hood twoards the front of the blister where any water would fall between the radiator and the serp. belts. The only thing i did differently with my set up was where I made the cuts on the hood I bought black door trim and put it around the boarder of where I cut the hood. So when you look at it when you open the hood you don't see a hack job, but rather a stock appearing job. may want to try that?

I wish i could have gotten around to painting it but 2 days ago it got ran over by a ford. It sucks but i picked up an 88 IROC today with the factory TBI which is just weird for $300, so life goes on i guess.
