complete exhaust system - yes or no?

I was at a swap meet today and saw a COMPLETE exhaust system for a 3rdGen.

It used to be on a car in town that I've seen run 11's!

Anyhoo - Its:

Hedmen headers
3" collector/y-pipe MANDREL BENT
3.5" from y-pipe back MANDREL BENT
has a cutout
Flowmaster muffler
and big 3" single tip

All of the pipe is MANDREL!

Do ya think this is worth $300? Yes, its used, but still looks very good.

The seller even said he'll install it for me!

Are you serious??? $300 is a steal for that. And he'd install it for you? You gotta be nuts not to go with this. I'm not to sure about Hedmen headers but it's definitely better than nothing, plus if he installs it for you, you know it will go on there right if he took them off of this 11 sec car. What's up with the cutout? Is it manual or electrical?

Manual cutouts... 3 wingnuts. Pretty bad-A, huh?

I'm excited - I'm buying it tomorrow.

This guy and his brother have built a lot of fast stuff...

They've built a S/C Sport Coupe (85ish) that pulls low 11's and he has a highly modded NA '86 IROC that is running high 11's, low 12's. They've also got a project Grand National that I've seen...

I saw it race against a Chevy Luv 4x2 that has a turbo TPI setup.... WHOA

Manual cutouts are pretty cheap these days, just make sure the threads on them aren't stripped. Another thing is, every time you wanna use it, you gotta climb out and get under the car to unbolt it. It's pretty easy but I doubt you'd use it that much unless you run to the races a lot. Another thing is don't expect much hp gain from just an exhaust. It will definitely flow better and sound meaner, but the exhaust is only one part of the whole system. If the pipes are bent a little too much, it can cause a pinch and that little bend piece will get extremely hot!! Definitely a good investment though for 300 bucks. Good luck with it.

I'm not expecting _much_ gain from it, but I would expect say maybe 10hp?

After all, it is a complete setup, from headers to tailpipe.

BTW: No cat is in the setup.

3.5 inch is too big for your setup.

Keep in mind that ultimately, there will be a 383 in its place.

PICTURE

I decided to buy the setup this morning.

$300 and here's what I got:

The crumpled part in the front was where he had to fit his manual tranny in. I'm just gonna go ahead and have a shop replace that little section.

3.5" mandrel!

I'll get more pics later - Its hard to see, but there's a Flowmaster muffler in the back...

I would get those headers powdercoated before you put them in. Shouldn't cost you too much and they will look gorgeous if you take care of your engine. I made the mistake of not getting mine powdercoated and they're all white and beginning to show rust spots.

I doubt it would clear an automatic transmission. That pipe is normally routed in front of the oil pan sump.

Hopefully it will clear. I've personally seen it on the guy's two cars. One had a T-10 and the other had a 700R4.
