Painting Calipers.....

I just bought new calipers and i want to paint them before thy get all orange and rusty... my question is do i have to prime them first or can i just spray the High Temp Engine paint right onb them (after masking and cleaning of course)

I used POR-15 marine cleaner and metal prep before painting. Still looks great after two years or so.

is it necessary to primer it before you paint it? cause i was just gonan clean it, hit it with some sand paper or something then paint it...

I didn't prime. The metal prep negates the need for sanding.

I didn't paint with POR-15; I used their other products to clean and etch the metal. I painted with high temp engine paint.

a better idea would be to get them powdercoated...it wont turn a sickish color after awhile and it will last much longer.

Ok, I will answer the actual QUESTION that was ASKED;

I used high temperature wheel paint on bare metal. It stuck fine, it looks great, and no chips or damage after a year of driving.

THERE!

Strangely enough, I thought I answered the question.

By the way, what is an 85 IROC "SS" Camaro?

Thats funny, I can't see whatever answer you are talking about, I'll I see is use por-15, That does everthing.

It's ok man, just like wash them off, and then spray it, thats all I did, it was over year ago, and I see no signs of it wearing away.

Its all good dood

i primered them also just to make sure the paint stuck. the high temp paint with ceramic kinda sinks in thats why i used 2 coats but they turned out real well.

Atleast that person didn't put fur on it

I'm interested to see what this looks like on stock wheel applications, my paint is fairly dark and seems like it would not be so noticable but would accent my painted inserts nicely... just not sure if its worth the trouble.

I used caliper paint. I just used brake cleaner before I painted them to get all the oil and crap off of them first.

yeah zepher is right i used about 1 can of brake cleaner per caliper, especially if you have new ones with the packaging oil get all that off before you prime/paint. it took a few days to do mine although it was only about maybe a half hour at a time.

lol its cool, doesnt have to be exact, I just havent seen one on a smaller radius wheel with bigger spokes, only on larger slimmer spokes where its more noticable, just curious how much you could see it cause you cant even see the brakes really well

i painted my new calipers with VHT caliper paint, its supposed to handle 900*s when applied properly and resist solvents. they dont offer a can of brake caliper primer so i assume that the paint is intended to be used on a clean bare surface. i prepped my calipers by makin sure there was no dirt, oil, etc on them, they were new so they werent contaminated. i applied a few coats then let the coat last totally dry for over a day in front of an electric heater, then i clear coated them and let the clear dry for a few days in front of the same electric heater. i think they look great, and i am very impressed with VHTs paint products that i used, i bought some of their brake caliper black and used that for my rear end, spindles and steering components.

heres a pic:

and the steering stuff painted:
