Let's see your custom door panels

Well, my entire interior is ripped out and it is time to start getting the custom stuff made. I want to get some ideas and would really like to see everyone's custom door panels/interiors. Let's see what you got.

I've got some pix on my site of flamed door panels that I did. You can see it here under "Interior - Flamed Door Panels" (or something like that). I'd post pix but for some reason I can't see my own site from work.

Hey Steve, did you ever solve your glue problem? Last I heard, you glued those in place and the heat was making them sag.

I don't think it was the heat making the glue "sag" so much as it was the fabric being too... errr, what... fuzzy? So basically it sticks nice and close for a time, but then it "softens" as the material "bounces back". Does that make any sense? I'm going to do it again after I order some pleather to do them and make a matching shifter boot. I'll head out to Sears to get that nifty tool to cut the flames out of 3/16" plastic so that they've a "harder" look to them. I picked up a book on making custom interiors and it details how to make arm rests blend into your design - I'll be doing that as well.

Im in the process of making flamed door panels and a flamed headliner using black and grey tweed for the fabric. One of the nicest custom thirdgen interiors (i think) can be found at... http://www.geocities.com/norine.geo/FlamedRed.html
Good luck with your interior!

Well, roughly, off the top of my head, I'd say... Lots.

It's been a project for the last three years basically.

Then again, a project never really ends...

That Flamed Z is Really what I wanted to model my car after. That is the sweetest camaro I have seen to date. I just wanted to get as many ideas as I can.

What do you think of red "Camaro" lettering stitched into the headrest of the black leather seats? I was trying to go with something custom for the seats as well.

Anymore?

It's not as impressive as the flamed door panels that some other
people have, but they are custom. I have 1997 30th anniversary
camaro seats in my car, that are charcoal grey with pleated flame red
bengal stripe inserts. I had the door panels made like the original
84 ones, but with pleated bengal stripe material on top and charcoal
carpet on the bottom. Here are some pictures.

Thanks guys, I don't want to hijack this thread, so to speak, but I appreciate the comments. If after this next go 'round I find it easier to do I may consider making custom door panels as a side thing. MAY. I'll let y'all know once it's done and you can see the finished product. Okay?

Hrm.. Actually, it could just be a case of the material "shedding", i.e. you glue the fabric, but the part that's glued was shed off as gravity took effect and weighted down the material. I don't know how fuzzy it was. I had a vague idea you might put some kind of a backer on the fabric, maybe fiberglass it first, I don't know if that'd help. You'd have to work fast I think, but if I'm not mistaken, that's that one member's firebird headliners were done. (I can't recall the name, but I know you'll remember him from your last thread.)

Good Luck. I'm going to try that some time on my Ranger (it's my guinea pig, 174,000 mile's and tons of rust), but it's got a big plastic door panel, so I'll have to fabricate custom bezels, arm rests, window sills, etc. for that project.

I think fiberglass would probably soak through any fabric and look pretty bad as well. I've got some synthetic leather on the way that "had better" look pretty kick @ss when done... I'm going to cut the flames out of 1/8" thick plastic to give it a sharper look/feel to it too. Time will tell.

Well, the entire interior is out, except for the dash. I found rust on the base of the back seatbelt, so I am removing all of the little pieces, going to sand the entire floor pan and get some high end high gloss black spray paint, maybe something like rust oleum, so at least in case it is seen it won't look bad at all. I would honestly rather take it to a shop who can do waht fatal did and have that done to my car... I realyl want the 4th gen dash as I already have a 97 console. I also really like the street rod feel in fatal's car how there isnt platic trim pieces going over carpet it gives a solid feel.

Just trying to find a shop that can do that kind of work... I am moving out of a garage into a carport apartment and can't do the work I use to anymore

we are between Houston and Galveston. Not sure about cost. We did all the work ourselves (except recovering the seats). That interior hasn't been in the car for a while now, but it was nice.

CaysE,
Thanks. The steering wheel we had custom made to match the wheels. We don't have it anymore. We will have a stock 2000 interior.

the picture with the light grey interior was a 96 dash. We then changed to a 97 dash in 2001 when we redid the car again. Now we are installing a 2000 dash.
Here's what we have done so far...

Here the doorpanels my husband built a year ago. We are putting them back into the car now.

why did you switch to the 00 dash? shoulda been the same as the 97, unless one had the leather parts on it.

yeah, how did you do the guages. I would love to have a new set of guages that would work. Did you just change the transmission gear and approximate that it woud be similar to the newer style guage, or what?

Jstcrzyengh ..

CustomX.. the 2000 dash was black. the 97 was lighter in color. The black matched the other interior pieces better. didn't like the 2 tone look.

86IROCTHD.. it works because we changed the motor (to LS1), transmission, suspension and wiring harness.

okfoz.. same answer as above. running the ac from 2000.

here's the new LS1..

fatal 88, I was wondering about that... I notice that your front clip is essentially an LS1 Car, the suspension the strut towers everything... Was that pretty much a direct bolt in deal, or was there some fabrication that had to go along with that?

we clipped the car from floorpan forward and welded in 4th gen clip, but kept our fender braces and front bumper assy. We had the firewall area refabricated with new metal. We wanted the wiper area smoothed. The welding and metal work we had another shop do and it cost a pretty penny. Since the new clip is 4th gen everything bolts on.
