Question about routing oil lines for twin turbos.

1. Should I put the oil pickup in the bottom of the pan..or can I put it in one of the existing fittings in the top on the block, like the one above the timing cover or behind the intake manifold...maybe one for each turbo.

2. Does each turbo require it's own lines, or can I run one line in, then one from one turbo to the next, and one return?

3. Should I weld the return into the oil pan, or is the valve cover sufficient?

my oil supply is tapped in from behind the intake manifold at the top of the block (oil sending unit). the line goes into the drivers' side turbo and then across to the passenger side turbo. the oil return lines go straight down to each side of the oil pan (i've got AN fittings welded on the oil pan).

hope this helps...

I've seen a bulkhead fitting put into the fuel-pump block-off place for the oil return, might be easier to do if you don't want to drop your pan.

Twin Turbo 358, I have seen the photos of your engine, and I have a tip for you. The oil feed you have shown will shorten the life of your passenger side turbo. The proper way to route the line is to "Y" the line in the center of the turbos or run separate oil feeds. By the time the driver's side turbo gets oil, there is not much volume or pressure for the other one. Just a tip, nice ride...

I think I'll route the turbo oil in lines seperatly..one from the hole in the back of th eintak manifold..one from the hole above the timing cover....thanks guys.

Will that mess up the oil presure for the rest of my engine tho?

I tapped off the oil galley at the rear top of the block with a 1/8" (or 1/4"?) NPT to 4AN tee. I ran -4An lines to each turbo, and then -10AN drain lines to the oilpan (45 deg AN to NPT swivel fitting) where I welded 1/2" NPT bungs on each front corner of the pan. You don't want any restriction in the drain, and it must drain above the oil level of the pan. Otherwise you'll have the oil backing up in the center section of the turbo, and seeping through the shaft seals and getting burned. The fuel pump plate I don't think would be free flowing enough for a drain, dunno about the timing cover (I tried to keep hoses away from moving parts like belts and pulleys). HTH!

Thanks Andris...what kind of oil pressure does your engine see with the lines routed that way?

Custom fuel rails?
Have you checked out how I did mine?
http://home.webworks2000.net/guido/fuel.html

Im not sure if you want to do this, but it IS one way of doing it.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that a chevy turbo kit had a drain on the fuel pump cover. It may not have been a Banks kitbut it was someone. I figured that would work just fine.

I see normal oil pressures (i.e. about 60 psi cold start, and about 20 psi idle to about 50 psi at WOT warm). I haven't driven the car since I snapped the axle back in October, so this is from my not so perfect memory I have a Sealed Power high volume / reg. pressure oil pump, BTW.

Jeff - A friend of mine got rid of his mini ram to go Super Ram again, and had a custom rail setup. He had -6 fittings welded to the end of each rail, and had it all metered with an SX fuel pressure regulator. I think he still has the rails if you are interested.

Is it possible to drill out the oil return line behind the fuel pump cover to a larger size?

I've been pondering doin a single turbo blow through setup on my 82 TA 358. I was thinking of putting in an oil cooler and feeding the turbo in series with the oil cooler, that way to cooler would cool the hot oil coming out of the turbo. Would this have enough pressure to work???
