Fuel Cell

Since this does involve the Interior being modifyied I am Post this here,

ok over the next Few Weeks, I am In the process of Fabing a Fuel Cell into My car, I put this into the Fabraction area but no response so I know there were a Few people Here asking and suggesting so I am going to Post my progress.

The Fuel Cell I am using is a Jaz 12gal w/sender and 2" sump. #252-012-01

THIS IS THE IHRA & NHRA REGULATIONS ON THIS
Code:
When permitted by class regulations, fuel tanks located outside
body and/or frame must be enclosed in a steel tube frame constructed
of minimum 1 1/4-inch O.D. x .065 chrome moly or .118 mild-steel tubing.
All fuel tanks must be isolated from the driver's compartment by a firewall,
Steel must be .025 Aluminum .032
completely sealed to prevent any fuel from entering the driver's
compartment. All fuel tanks must have a pressure cap and be vented
outside of car body. A positive-locking screw on fuel-tank cap is
mandatory on all cars. Insulated fuel tanks prohibited. When used, fuel
cells must have a metal box protecting the part of the fuel cell that is
outside of body lines or trunk floor, excluding hose-connection area in
rear. Non-metallic fuel cells or tanks must be grounded to frame.

I am in the process of Fabricating the Sheet Metal Box, I already Created Templates for the box out of Poster Board, Just need to Trace them on to .025 Sheet Metal and A few Cuts and Bends Later I will be ready to Start Welding the Box. I will Keep You updated with Pics Comming soon, I am adding a Pic of the cad Drawing of the box that My brother Desinged that I am Using, if you want the actuall Cad File I can Email it to you

The Box is being mounted in the Rear where the Hatch Well is. I havent Finished the Lid Yet. It will have a Lid with a fuel access door Sorta like the pic I am including but Mine isn't tubed and will be flush mounted With the Floor the Runs to the back seat The Lid Will Bolt on so that If for any reason I need to remove the Fuel Cell I can But I will have a Fuel Resistant Silicone Used as a Gasket to make sure it is sealed. Remember My Box is similar but not quite as big as in the pic below, but Will be mounted totally different.

box looks good so far I have the same cell and cant decide how or where to mount it. I would like to see pics of it installed when done
even though it will be flush with the floor and covered dont u still need a firewall between driver and cell. I mean it is still inside

Actually I have a NHRA and IHRA Rule Book + I emailed several Tech Inspectors and they said the same as the Rule Books, The box must be mounted in at least .025 Sheet metal or .032 Aluminum and Be sealed from the inside of the car, But will alow for a 6"X6" Hinged Postitve locking Fuel Access Door. The tech inspectors said the the picture I included of the other car with a fuel would be Perfect as long as there was a Gasket or fuel resistant Selaer between the lid and the box, it had to have a vent line running Out side the box, and the access door was positive locking and the hole box was at least .025 Thick. and a Guard for the sump the same thickness. The rules say that you can leave a small opening for access to the Fittings. As long as everything meets the above cirteria you do not need a firewall, it is no different than the gas tank Being mounted under the floor as long as the box is sealed and vented properly you woun't notice a difference.

If you weren't making a sealed box, what are the rules as to what a "firewall" is? Would I be able to seal the rear hatch with sheet metal, bolt it down as your idea, and just use a fuel-resistant sealant?

Well to Fit a 12 Gal Fuel cell in the rear you are gonna have to cut, and I decide that cutting a large Hole Framing it in with 1"x1" .125 Wall square tubbing would allow me to make room for a Muffler fitment on one side and other storage area on the other side of the box since I am doing all the sheet metal work. But as long as it is sealed and Vented correctly I wouldn't see why not. Contact you local Track Tech Official and he should give you guidance and Info on the Tech Inspector you need to contact.

Cool setup! I have been trying to figure out a clean way to mount a cell in my 87, and I really like this way. I'd love to have a copy of the CAD file! Please send it to jjhindsiii@yahoo.com. Thanks!

The box is all welded up so I am going to link some pics, next sunday the install is taking place. I went to the Steel Shop and Purchased 10ft of 1"x1" .118" Square Tubing and 10Ft of 1"x2" .118" square Tubing. along with 7",10" and 4 1/2" Cut off Blades for the Chop Saw, Table saw, and Angle Grinder and baught some .030 Wire for the Mig, I think that should get me off to a good start.
