First, What make you think the block is cracked?

Second. If it is cracked, were is it cracked at.

Third. some engine shops can fix a cracked block, depending on where it is at.

Forth. You could get another block out of a chevy truck. Shoulnt cost much.

Fifth. You may be better off getting a 350. It will cost proably the same. Depending where you can get a used motor. The TPI system will work on a 350.

Give us some more details, and we can help you out.

we'll shes overheating pretty bad, and theres Dark stuff in the coolant overfill. its an idea my dad heared from a mechanic, and it would kinda make sense.

im afraid of the cost of an engine shop fixing it, lol, its after all a 305 TBI which is.... yeaaaaaa....
so thats not worth it.

this is driving me nuts.

I'll sell my '87 305 for $50. It's mostly there. Still has the QJet carb which you can replace. Missing one or two head bolts, valve cover, and balancer. It's been sitting under plastic for two years, and ran great when it was removed(as well as an LG4 can). It has some miles (~110K), but it will work in a pinch. Plus we're practically neighbors. I'll even help with the switch if you want.

As long as the heads have the same PN then swapping one is OK. An engine with two different heads is going to be fubar. Take the head off with the manifolds attached. Then try and take them off on the bench. Should be much easier. If the crack was leaking coolant into the cylinder, then you have a good chance that one or more pistons scuffed. You probably ruled that out since you know it's the head now. If you need any help let me know.

heads and manifolds..

I just did the head gaskets on my 88 305 TBI. The exhaust manifolds (on mine at least) had to come off before you could get to the bottom set of head bolts. They came off fairly easily... had to persuade the head bolts a little more forcefully, but aside from that...
