VATS system problem
VATS system problem
On my 88gta, I already have the VATS system partially circumvented with the resistor trick. This has worked well for the last year or so. Now I'm getting random no cranks & I have to wait for the VATS timer to reset. I have either a bad connection somewhere, a bad ground, or the VATS module is screwed up. So, here's the questions.
1: Where is the VATS module & what does it look like? I've searched old posts & read conflicting reports.
2: Assuming the module is bad & is not cost effective to replace, has anyone totally removed the VATS system. What is involved. It looks to me that the module completes ground paths for the starter relay, fuel enable, ignition, etc. How would this be accomplished without the VATS module.
Any VATS Phd's out there?
Thanks, FJK

You need to bypass the starter enable relay. I'm not sure where it is, but if you look at a wiring diagram, that's what you need to do.
For the fuel pump, you need to simulate the VATS signal, as 2vmodular said, or you need a PROM burned to disable VATS.
Another alternative is to do what the police cars did, which is get a new VATS module, solder the wires together that are supposed to go to the key, and the first time you start it up, a resistance of 0 will be set in the 'memory' of the vats module. Not sure how much a vats module costs though, you need to get a new one from a dealer to do this.
