Lets Play, Whats That Noise????
Got my car back, put my new cat back system on. I still have the same "chunk" sound when I give the car full gas. It did this before I took it to the tranny shop. I have looked over all their work. I was hopping it was my muffler rattling, thats not it, I replaced all it. You feel it really hard on the passenger floor board. My new guess' are Motor mount, or suspension. Let me know your thoughts please.

OO, forgot to say when it happened.

No, its not the tranny mount. They replaced that while it was in for the tranny, and I have looked it over. All the bolts are tight!!!

thats what I'm leaning towards, but wanted everyones opinion as I don't have much experince on camaros and whats known for breaking easy. Also rem I got this car from a teenage male.
I had this "clunk" when I reinstalled the motor. When we rebuilt the trans. we put it up on a 4 point lift and tightened everything up - it went away. I still don't know what was causing it - sorry.
I had some motor to trans. bolts loose as well as some other stuff. It wasn't a U joint.

Yea, I still trying to fig out how to get to the right motor mount due to all the emissions CRAP. Does the motor tweek from right to left, or left to right?? And how hard are the motor mounts to get to??
Looking from the front of the car, the crank spins clockwise, so the pressure side will be the passenger's side of the car. What happens some times is that when you decelerate, the engine will shift to the driver's side, then twist around to the passenger's side when you hit the throttle, causing the clunk you are hearing. I think that if it isn't the trans mount, there are two things that I would check:
(1) Engine mount. Like everyone else has said, it is most likely your culprit. You will need to remove the exhaust manifold and smog equipment on that side to get to it.
(2) Rear end lower control arm bushings. Could be that you have a bad control arm bushing that is clunking against the rear frame rail when you hit the gas. I have seen this happen, but it is much rarer than a trans mount or an engine mount.
Hope you get it fixed. I had a trans mount rip out once, and I couldn't give it any gas without the thing clunking and moving around. How annoying, and not too good for the car either!

Are you sure it's a new trans mount? Climb under the car, and try to bench-press the tailshaft (rearmost end) of the trans to the floorboard. (It will pivot easily on the engine mounts.) If you can move the tailshaft of that trans upward at all, the trans mount is shot. My trans shop didn't replace mine, they put the busted one back in. Nice, eh? Get the poly one from energy suspension (thru summit) for $26 and you'll never replace it again.

Its new alright, nice clean black rubber thingies, with nice new chrome/nickle bolts. The rest of the bottom of the car is NASTY!!!
So I gotta remove the emissons #$^@# to look at that. Damn. thats gotta be a pita.

I'd throw a set of cheap rear shock on that thing first. My 83 was pretty "clunky" at first. Turned out the rear shock mount on the body was broken. After welding that in with some new shocks, all was good

Again, buy the ES poly torque arm mount; a pain in the butt to put on, and you have to lower the trans tailshaft a bit, but it really improves the car's handling! It totally eliminates the "wiggle" in the car's rear that happens during sharp turns! I did one when I replaced the last transmission. Thread Starter

Well, after playing around with my show truck fixing its tranny mount. I went over to the camaro and started inspecting crap. I took a pry bar and put in on the right side of the engine, started lifting engine up. I could get it to move about .25-.5 inches. Ok, I went to drivers side, went to move it, No movement. Tryed again, no movement. called my dad to come over, has worked on cars for 30+ years. Did same thing and aggred that the motor mount is toast. Push on the back end of car for shock mount, bounced it off the bump stop a few times. No Nosie. I looked at that bar thing along the drive shaft other day. It looked fine. I'm like 99% sure its the motor mount. SOOOO, what all is involved in swaping these bugers out. I know jack up the engine, but do I have to pull half the suspension out like on my s10?? Or a combo of swivles and extensions work?? My repair book don't tell ya crap on this.
