Sun visors keep falling!

I've tightened the screw as much as possible, Do I need to buy all new sun visors? I wish they made these better, everytime I hit a bump they fall in my face. I may just take them off! Let me know if there's a secret to this, PLEASE!

Drill a 1/8 hole thru the black body, and the shaft in it, and install a poprivet.

There is a plastic piece that fits in the visor. It is supposed to cause a tight fit on the shaft. If it wears out it will fall because the fit has loosened.

Here 'ya go.................

Drill a 1/8 hole thru the body, and the shaft. This will get your depth so you don't drill all the way thru

I used trim paint and a paper matchstick on the rivet

Here you see where I drilled, and the finished product. If you drill from this side, it will be invisible, this is the side away from you when in the car.

The 'bullet' that slips into the plastic insert is often at fault. The 'bullet' is supposed to be stationary, but often breaks and turns. As a consequence, regardless of how much the screw is tightened, the visor will fall.

Maybe some more explanation is in order:

The last pic, fuzzy as it is, shows the driver's side visor, as if you were looking thru the windshield.

I simply drilled a hole thru the body and the shaft, and put in a poprivet, then painted the rivet. I only drilled thru one side of the body, and the shaft itself.

The masking tape on the drill bit, naturally, was to keep me from going deeper than the rivet is long. I didn't want to go completely thru both sides of the body. I used a 1/4" rivet, (it's actually about 7/16 total, 1/4 is the thickness of sheetmetal it will hold together), just popped it in the blind hole like you see.

This is how my bud at the upholstery shop fixed my first set, what has happened to mine is the shaft gets loose inside the body. The shaft turns in the body, instead of being solid there, and the visor turning on the shaft, like it's supposed to. Now it's tight again, and the visor stays up, or swivels down just like it should. I guess the plastic insert on the 3 pairs I've repaired was ok. But on this last pair, I could actually see and feel the play between the shaft and the body.

Hope this helps explain it some.

A little more on the rivet:
It's a 1/8 diameter rivet, 1/4 is the length on the package.
Drill a 1/8" hole.

Put it in with a rivet gun, it expands inside the hole.

I like the rivet trick. That is easier than what I did. I took it off and hammered into the body with a punch until the body deformed enough to capture the center post. I punched the side that wasn't visible from below. It took a heck of a lot of deflection before it finally stopped that inner shaft from rotating. Then I painted it. I've wondered if epoxy would do the trick.

JB Weld would certainly be an option, I think. Of course, the hanger could be picked up at a boneyard for little or nothing.
