Remote start is basically a way of emulating the ignition switch by remote control. Press a button on the remote and the vehicle's engine will start along with any accessories that were left on such as the window defroster or air conditioner.

Keyless entry like the name implies is a way of entering the vehicle without using keys. Press a button on the transmitter and the doors will unlock.

as a note: if you have a carbeurated engine most remote car starters will not work on them. They must be fuel injected.

I went to a alarm installer and was told it would cost $300.... .....to install......

I'm gonna have to tackle this myself if i don't find someone that's cheap....

 

honestly its not that hard of a project to do.. if you dont have a lot of experience with tihs kind of thing it would probably take you around 6 hours to do the whole thing, and it can be quite educational and fun. just make sure you have a good multimeter, the right equipment and a little bit of patience

 

if the most extensive electronic thing you have done is replace the speakers in your car, dont do this. it will be hell and you will probably mess something up. if you have installed a stereo from scratch (not using the wiring harness from crutchfield or someplace like that) then maybe. a remote start system is quite a bit more challenging then a regular alarm. if it would cost $300 for a shop to do it then you should not do it yourself. of course unless the system you are putting in has door pops and can roll the windows up and down seperately, it probably shouldnt cost $300 to install. just my thoughts on the situation.
