compressed nitrogen

Anyone ever think of using compresses nitrogen to slow the burn rate and keep detonation at bay. Since it isn't combustable the only benefit it would have is lower the intake charge and slowing the burn rate of the combustable mixture.

What are your thoughts?

Just like pure O2 would get out of control and blow tourch an engine in an instant. Nitrogen would be hard to properly meter in without dampening the combustion process. Luckily there was a molecule that had N and O bonded that are easily stripped and reapplied to other chains in the combustion process. Thats what the nitrogen in nitrous does but on a molecular level. they are separated by heat energy around 500 to 600 degrees for use in combustion. Some "fastest streetcar" (FSCA/NMCA/NMRA) guys use a nitrogen bottle with a regulator set at 1000+ psi fed at the top of a nitrous bottle to push down on the liquid nitrous so that it flows up the feed tube at the specific optimal rate regardless of the temperature of the liquid nitrous. A bottle heater wouldnt work in the car, and they do heat them before throwing them in ( in special hot water vats). the reason the bottle heater wouldnt work is the nitrous is released from the bottle at such a massive rate the bottle cools from the refridgeration effect. It couldnt be counteracted with a regular heater during the actual run.

Wouldn't the whole reason using it is to dampen the combustion process. With compressed air and fuel preignition could be a problem. Just like using a water injection kit, It's not flammable it does however slow the combustion rate down and lessen the intake temps. That is what I meant by using nitrogen.


My idea is to fill a small o2 bottle(5lbs) with nitrogen and use n2o jets to meter it and a boost sensing switch to come on at 18 psi or so. Just shooting a small shot into the uppipe to cool the charge and slow down the event....

dmapening it that much wouldnt it be easier to just lower the boost and reduce timing? you will get the same result; lower specific HP.

Do you think it would lower the charge that much and perhaps squash the flame? I've never messed with any injection before(alcohol/water/n2o/etc.). Just had a brainstorm or maybe it was a fart! Just thought that the temperatur of the gas and being a small shot of it would help detonation at high boost levels. I can safely run 20 psi with 1 gallon of Xylene mixed with 93. So I wont look into an injection unit until I get to the 21-25 psi range....

CO2 and Nitrogen are both sucessful agents in fire extinguishers with CO2 being the most prominent.

to achieve the same results you should just use C02 in the nitrous bottle. Hell, NX has figured it out, they offer a "N-ter-cooler Kit" which can be used to spray C02 or Nitrous. Obviouselly, C02 is not a desired gas to have during the combustion process, but the cooling effect means more boost and more timing... say, what were we talking about?

As I think about it, It isn't good to use either of them using nitrogen may increase nox% and the way they pull people over with the portable sniffer I don't need the hassle. CO2 would probably hurt the combustion process, by introducing co2 the oxygen level would decrease and prolly create hot spots. Just a thought...
