It looks exactly like the one I got out of a factory 94 Blazer... Not sure who makes it, probably Eaton. It is most likely a Locker 10 bolt 7 5/8 with a 28 spline axle. Looks good to me...

Tha's absolutely an Eaton gov-lok, doesn't look anything like a torsen even. They were mostly used in the S10 line, but for a period in the 84-85 timeframe they went into thirdgens as well when they ran low on the auburn posi's. Anyhow, it's a low performance POS locking differential. Don't get me wrong, it can spin both wheels, but it is a very frail design and can't handle the kind of shock loading that a performance car on dry street will give it. Like i said, it's from the S10 truck line, designed for getting anemic engined light trucks out of mud.

You can run it if you want, but be prepared for the day that it explodes. They have a rep for scattering parts even in 4 banger S10s (just do a seach on 'eaton locker' on these boards for a few horror stories)

Don't get me wrong, maybe you'll get lucky. I have been so far. The 3.23 rear i swapped in my car was cursed with an eaton, and i still haven't swapped in the torsen and axles i have laying around almost a year later. And i have definitely given it some abuse, I have about 20 drag strip passes on it, most of them with 60's in the 1.8s. I also put over 10k miles on it, including 4 months of daily driving with drag radials (which i was sure was gonna pop it, DRs with a locker on the street is insane)

Ed nailed it! They still use them today in FULL SIZE GM 4x4 trucks also and yep those trucks have 10 bolt covers. This locker is a POS, very common to have them explode with moderate wheel spin alot of people loose this locker when they get stuck in mud and finnaly catch some traction and it looks like a grenade went off inside the differential. DO NOT USE THIS IN YOUR CAR!

Put it on ebay and take that money and put it towards a zexel and some 28 spline axles. You would be surprised at what things sell for on ebay.

oops, didn't put the sig on the other post. The engine itself is really stock, but the 3k vigilante converter does a fine job of making it seem like more coming off the line (like i said, 1.8 60's are common for me)

What breaks in 'em. From what i understand, they literally explode. Seeing it up close and comparing to the torsen i have it's obvious why. First, even though it's a locker, there is still a clutch mechanism that engages the locker. As that wears, you get some slop in it's action, which will increase the shock loading. Also, the case is just very thin, which will lead to flex under extreme loads. Really the whole thing is pretty frail really. So between the weak case, weak design, and tendency to shock load itself hard, things start to rip itself apart and the whole thing explodes.

I'd buy a take out zexel from SLP for $99. I'd hurry though, the supply of these $99 units will dry up fast now that the camaro is no longer in production.

http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...TNUMBER=64501T

Since you have an 89, you just might get lucky and have 28 spline axles. And, please understand the zexel is a 3 series carrier that will only work with 3.23. 3.42, 3.73 gears. It might work with 4.10's, but I'm not sure about that. It will not work with stock 2.73, 3.08 gears without using a ring gear spacer. (not recomended)

I scored the exact same thing out of the newspaper for cheap .......... someone mentioned they sold one for $ 350 cdn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll sell mine for $100 CDN

....GM called it the " cookoo clock posi " .... yes it was used in the s10's and stuff

Can I use this carrier still (Outter case) ???? ( strip the guts out of it ....and put in some nice ones ?)

I would love to get rid of this ...I didn't know what I was buying ...but for the price ..I'll use it as a paper weight

Honestly I'd get the zexel from SLP, then go to a wrecking yard and pick up a complete 3.42 rear and put the zexel in it. That's exactly what I did. I got my 3.42 rear for $75. Got the 28 spline axles for $100, and the zexel for $99 plus shipping. Then I added new carrier bearings for around $50, and a adjustable shim set for $30. I also replaced my axle bearings and seals, along with my rear wheel cylinders. So I'm in everything about $400. If you get lucky and have 28 spline axles then there's $100 you can save.

If you have to get the zexel installed in an existing 3.42 rear end, I've seen prices ranging from $50 to $150 for labor. If you have new gears put in you are talking about $300 more for parts, and more for labor. That's why the used 3.42 rear I got was so attactive to me. Even if I blow it, there are dozens of 3.42 rears around here for $75. And hopefully if it does blow, it won't hurt the zexel. If is does, then I'm covered. My spare zexel from SLP was delivered by UPS today.

Ok well my gov-loc is coming, it has 3.42 gears on it and I have a spare set of 3.42 in the basement.

I think I will remove the gears of the posi and sell the posi alone. I think I can sell it on ebay for at least what I paid for it, 125$ !

I think people will buy it for a decent price.
just like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...400778364&rd=1

I'll contact SLP this afternoon to check the freight charge.

Thx guys.

Geez, you only paid $125 and the one you linked to is up to $154 already! You are going to end up making money on this deal.

The freight to Washington state was $12.95 for the zexel from SLP.

If it's an auburn posi, which it sure looks like it is, all it's good for is to weight your trash down. Even if the auburn works now, it won't work for very long.

Go get a used 3.42 rear from a wrecking yard, put the SLP zexel and 28 spline axles in and your set.

ok thx alloy, got the axles, got the gears just missing a posi that makes sense.

SLP fowarded me to Zirck's which is the canadian division of SLP and they'll have the posi in 2 week for 179$ Canadian shipped and everything.

While looking of ebay for posi I bought drop springs! can't wait to have that .
