Dual Pipes
can anyone having dual pipes explain their set-up in the back, mine run along either side of the drive shaft with corvette cats in the front but where i run into problems is that they ran them under the axle saying there wasn't any room to run them over top (driver side) my pipes are 2 1/4" with glass packs in the rear (along side of the gas tank).

actually surprisingly enough, clearance isn't bad (except over speed bumps just go SLOW!) The problem is when Jacking the rear end the axle rests on the pipes i really want to go over the axle.

thats deadbird's car. he made the exhaust himself, including the mufflers. he did a very nice job. the exhaust is fully welded and has an H-pipe and everything. i believe he has a website link in his sig to more pictures. search for some of his posts.

Yeah... that guy's pretty handy. He grafted some cool door handles in too. Stock thirdgen doorhandles are definitely on my sh*t list.

Not on my car, its blue not white
but i was doing research on it off this site as i need exhaust this year. Only good parts of my exhaust are the cats and the muffler, all else is rotten.
And i need emissions.
If i can scrounge up the money i want to go 4th gen borla. But thats doubtfull.
My mechanic has a pipe bender and can do that dual exhaust set up. Only thing he mentioned about it to me was that the driver side pipe sits abit close to the feul lines, so "might" cause problems. And that particular set up has no cats, not legal.
Just have to add them.
I luv how he used the Forth Gen tips to even out were the exhaust comes out the back.

The pipe does run rather close to the fuel lines but, using some aluminium flashing to make a heat sheild solves any 'would-be' problems. I have no problems so far but will eventually be making a heat shield anyways. Not a high priority though.

all i can say is excellent work, man. very nice. how do those homemade mufflers sound? loud? deep? they look like they flow very well. i have true duals with hooker aerochambers and it sounds deep as hell.

dar.. at idle in the garage they are almost unreasonably bassy depending on where yuo stand but, they aren't loud. The sound is hard to describe really w/o having a sound clip of some sort for listening. I, by no means have any real smarts to design stuff, but, from observation of driving the car on brief stints, the exhaust loudness/tone really varies by throttle. If you drive somewhat sanely, the exhaust tone is very deep w/o being obnoxious loud. When you lay the hammer down though, it's the next closest thing to running open exhaust in sound (which I've done more than once while making the exhaust
).
From what I can tell (w/o any real brains behind it) is once the is enough 'air' velocity moving thru the mufflers too overcome the perforated inner tubes, the mufflers basically act as straight tubing. Civilized driving though, allows for the mufflers to actually absorb some of the sound.
I tried once to record the exhaust but, I had to have the level so low that you could barely hear the car idle but, when revved, it still distorted the mic at 6ft distance if that tells you anything on the variation of loudness.
In all honesty, I'm not positive I like the depth of the tone yet but, I do like the sound of the true duals (it's similar to the mustang soound which I've always liked). Adding 3ft of pipe to the muffler end seriously changed the depth of the tone though so, I've concidered making a single case, dual muffler setup to fit the stock location. Nothing is set in stone though since I still have tons left to do on the car but, it's all still up in the air.
I thank you guys for you compliments though. I only made my exhaust mainly for the fact that so many people said the pipe can't run over the drivers side and, the factory routing of the y-pipe under the oil pan is such on awful design IMO.
Hawk.. if you want to copy my exhaust.. by all means do it.. I hold no patents and what I make isn't a big secret. I've explained my doorhandles and my "CAI" (which is nowhere close to done) to quite a few people who like the 'stock look' but yet it isn't but, just what to know what's involved or the parts used.
Sorry that was long & boring but, the length of my rambling is proportionate(sp?) to the amount of frosty Buds I've had

awww....the old getting honkeytonked on a saturday night trick. i agree with you abou the poor design of the y-pipe on these cars. i cant stand the single exhaust system, which is why i had to have dual exhaust...and as you also mentioned, the sound is great.

I'd put that dual setup on MY car
..... if you ever run tight on cash ...... I'd buy one of those setups off of ya ! I wish I had the space and stuff to mess around like that
nice system

Deadbird - how is your ground clearance on that? Do you scrape much? It doesn't look as bad as some others I've seen but its still not tucked up as much as I'd like on my car. My car seems to scrape enough as it is with 3" stock routed exhaust. Is your car lowered?
