Rock crusher 5 speed or how much power have you put through a 5 speed
Is a rock crusher 5 speed myth or reality? I have heard of them but haven't found anybody that knows anything about them. Supposedly you put rock crusher 4speed parts in a 5 speed. You keep the overdrive but have the guts of a rock crusher and therefore the ability to put more power through it. A stock 305 just doesn't do it for me and from what I understand thats about all a 5 speed can handle? Or at least thats all the Camaro version can handle, 5.0 Mustangs seem to be able to put more power through them? So if I wanna build a mild, say 3 to 400 horse, small block and would like a stick without spending a grand for a 6 speed or an aftermarket tranny and I want an overdrive what do I do?
THANKS!

An M22 had the nickname of the rock crusher. That's because Muncies were crap trannies and might as well be put in use as such. (and they had a whine to them b/c of the gearset angles)
Muncies sucked because the case flexes. The differently angled gearsets used in the M22s were a bandaid to the real problem.
By the time you buy an M22 gearset and the aftermarket case (to fix the real problem,) that's now available for them, you could have just done a 6 speed.
To answer your question, there are no 5 speed adaptations for Muncie M22 parts. Muncie parts don't fit Richmond 5 speeds, nor T5s. The best streetable "adaptation" equivalent is the Richmond 5 & 6 speeds, which use Super T-10 parts. A B.W. Super T-10 is not only a better trans. than a Muncie, it's a lot easier to find parts for.
If you're not willing to spend a grand, then you're not ready to play the game. Save up, go T56, and you'll be happy you did. Keep your eyes peeled for deals.

G-Force makes a kit that will have no problem holding that power. They're rated to 600 hp and 500 tq with drag radials and a moderate clutch. Do a search, there's a couple threads about this. I just posted prices and info in one of the more current threads.

my iroc pulls 100mph at the track and i beat the crap outta my t5, donuts, 1st to 2nd gear burnouts, 2nd gear brakestands stretchs, missed gears hard, into 1st instead of 3rd, into 2nd instead of 4th. its held up well id say.
