Where is this fuel leak comming from?
This is in regards to the '89 IROC in the sig...
I'm assuming that what you're seeing (see picture) is fuel leakage from somewhere around the tank.
Also, I can tell that fuel must be leaking from somewhere because I can smell unburnt fuel on the outside of the car from several yards away. If I leave it in the garage overnight, the whole garage will reak of unburnt fuel in the morning.
The smell is most noticable, by far, when the tank is full.
I don't know if the picture tells you anything. You're looking at the driver's side of the car, and that's the only side with the stain on it. I can't tell where it is originating from but, interestingly enough, that's the same side as the fuel filler.
My dad is saying that there is a rubber hose that connects the filler to the tank, and that might be leaking. Does that ever happen?
I just trying to avoid having to drop the tank if I can...
Thanks

The leak is coming from the fuel tank filler neck. GM had a recall on a bad solder joint on camaro filler necks from 89-92, (I think thats the right years). Many thirdgen camaro's have this problem. I had gm fix mine under the recall about 1 year ago. Dont drive the car if possible, right now you're a fire hazard waiting to happen!

Ick... I wasn't aware there was ever a recall on these things.
Do you think that GM still offers repair of the defect? How much did it cost?
Also, how long did it take (can't be without my car for too long)?
Thanks!

3 hours, you'll have to call your nearest chevy dealer and give them the VIN, as long as there is still an open recall then the repair will be free

91Z: Do you remember having the same sort of stain on your car?
Because I just called my Chevrolet dealer here, they asked for my VIN number, and then told me that the only thing they had a recall on for my car was the seat-belt buckles.
I'm just trying to figure out if you had the same problem as I'm having, because I think they should have mine recalled if so...

Just figured that I'd update the post with what I've found out through the day...
First off, I found a site called AllData ( http://www.alldata.com/ ) that has a huge database of automotive recalls. I looked up my car on that site and, while I didn't see anything relevent to the fuel leak on the "Safety Recalls" section, I did find the following under the "Safety Bulletins" section:
320. 89316C NOV 88 Fuel - Feed/Return Pipe Repair
See here for the page I pulled that information from.
I called back my Chevrolet dealer and gave them the "TSB number". I'm not 100% sure that I understood the explanation (my dad actually did the calling
), but it seems essentially that my car was not built at the right time to be elegible for service.
So, I'm not really sure if there's anything that I can do here. It seems like my car has a problem that is likely due to a manufacturer defect, and it also seems that other owners with the same problem have been elegible for service by GM. AllData even lists the Service Bulletin for this defect under the section for my year, make, and model of car, and yet I am not elegible for service.
I know that nothing anybody says here will change what the dealership will or won't do, but could somebody please help me make sense out of this?
Thanks again

No stain, just really strong gas smell from that area. You may have to eat the cost of repair unfortunately. Make sure you get it done a GM dealership that way the work/parts has a warranty. Good luck!
