Painting formula wheels

Ok, I've been wanting to do this for a while, and finally could resist no longer. I'm painting the inner part of one of my formula wheels grey. I sanded and polished the outer lip to a satin finish. I didnt want the lip to be shiny like chrome, just wanted it to look new. I'm trying to get the same kind of look as the new mustang bullitt wheels. I used dupli-color gunmetal metallic paint, see pic. I'll post another pic in a little bit when the paint is dry enough to remove the tape. I'm debating putting a layer of clearcoat over it too. I'm afraid the clear will dull the metallic look, though.

Ok, just peeled the masking tape off. What do you guys think?

BTW, if anyone wants to tell me I ruined a perfectly good formula wheel, you should have seen this wheel before. The clearcoat was in horrible shape, it was coming off in blotches, and there are a few nicks in the wheel. It took alot of work just to get the lip to shine up again.

That looks pretty familiar..
I do like the color you used more than black. I might have to redo mine to more of a gunmetal color. Very nice, I like it alot.

I really love that Formula wheel now. I like it better than all silver. No way did you ruin a perfectly good Formula wheel. I believe if you add a clear coat, it may make the finish look a bit darker. At least thats what happened when I used clears over metalic paints.

Could you post a pic when you have them on the car. I would like to see them from a bit of a distance, like they would look from a side shot of the car.

Thanks.

My car is black, but i'm going to get it repainted either white or silver, so I think they'll look good either way. I halfway want to spray clear over it, and halfway don't. The clear might give the paint some 'depth', but I'm afraid it will take away from the metallic finish. BTW, I got the paint from Wal-Mart, it was like $3 for the can.

EDIT: Heres a quick photoshop (not my car) to get an idea how they will look. It doesnt look quite right, because the car in the picture is at a little different angle than the wheel picture. But if gives the idea. I prolly should have put in a center cap for the pic too :P

OutSTANDing!

I have wondered about that look for some time. My 16s are looking very poor from the clearcoat falling away. Cat pee has hastened the demise of the clear but that's another post altogether

Great job man. Now I have a good idea of how I can fix mine. Awesome color choice btw.

Glad no fumes were ignited by the cig.... I plan to have a margarita in the other hand, lol.

Peace,

K

I second that. You ever think about body colored? I might as well do a Photoshop of it.

I second that too.

Ward,
LOL, you made the Formula rims in 17" That would be kind of cool. That gunmetal does look great.

It makes me want to go home and paint my 15s, even though I will never put them back on my car except in emergency situtions.

I may turn 2 of them into a coffee table, keep one hanging up on my wall, and keep the last one as a full size spare.
