New best times...

Drove my IROC out to Cecil County. 2 hour drive each way. Street trim with swaybars, interior, etc. Bolted on a set of front skinnies. End result...

60' : 1.624
330' : 4.765
1/8 : 7.424
MPH : 91.94
1000' : 9.731
1/4 : 11.665
MPH : 117.20

To say that I was surprised by this ET is an understatement. I had no idea my new combo had this type of power. I literally just got the car together and did some minor street tuning by Cecil and then raced. I would have been satisfied with low 12's (my previous best). I was optimistically praying for 11.8's but REALLY believing that I would not hit 11's. Scary thing is - the car was in street trim except for the front skinnies. I think she's capable of 11.5's in track trim :-O

The car is a 1990 IROC-Z. It's an anamoly. The stock 350 shortblock has NEVER been out of the car. GM must have been having a good day on the assembly line back in 1990. The 700R4 tranny has never been rebuilt. It has the 10-bolt rear to boot. All naturally aspirated. No juice or force. Basically, it’s a MiniRam sitting on top of ported AFR190s with a Lethal EFI Performance Camshaft and long tubes through a single 3" exhaust.

... The mph still blows me away when I think about it in respect to what my car is. FWIW, my first time down the track was a 11.89@115 with me letting off because the tranny didn't shift into 3rd. The next run I got it to shift into third and pulled a better 60ft (preloaded the converter) resulting in my better times.

ABSOLUTE HUGE thanks to, in no particular order: Mike, Dave, Andris, Mark, Greg, Rick, and Kev. Without you guys this never would have happened. From everything from motivation, food, tire pressure, pit crew-ing, to camera work, to girly drinks. Woot! Thanks a bunch.

8.6M Video of the run...

Excellent results Tim. Amazing what the "puny" 350 with the stock two bolt bottom-end is capable of putting out and still hang together.

Might want to look at your Governor Valve on the Tranny. I had a similar problem with my tranny where it just didn't want to go into 4th and that was the culprit. It bascially felt as if the TV cable was WAY out of adjustment (but wasn't).

Do I dare ask what you are shifting at?

I still need to parse through the data but I was trying to shift at 6500. I know that the first time down the track I bounced off the 6800 rev limiter on the 2-3 shift and Datamaster showed 6850rpms (because they run a calculation to give you values above the max ALDL value). FWIW - I was running the Wide Band BIN on both runs and have real AFR values for the entire way down the track.

Yea - I didn't tell anyone. I haven't raced my car at the track in over 2 years. I would have felt too much pressure to run good ... when, in fact, I had no freaking clue how this car was going to run. I hardly even went to WOT before running down the track. Next time though I'll be sure to let you know! The car was totally back to street car trim with power steering, mechanical water pump, swaybars, etc. I got rid of all that race-oriented blower stuff. I think it was a good decision

I can't talk about the cam specifics as per an agreement with Joe Overton (Lethal EFI Performance). However, I can say the following ... I was already in the process of picking a new cam and the cam that Joe ground for me is fairly close to the direction I was headed. David Vizard's book on Modifying Chevrolet Camshafts and Valvetrain Components explains the deal on cam figures vs. overall horsepower and torque. Everything that book said - matches exactly how my new LEFI cam worked. However, even if Joe were to tell the specs then that would only be part of the story. Lobe Shape, symmetry, etc. is also very important.

How can I get ahold of this Overton guy? I mean personally I think keeping a cam grind "secret" is gay gay and just plain gay, unless you're the points leader or close to it in whatever racing league you may be in. I mean your car is just for fun at the track and street use isn't it? I'm not trying to knock you in any way Tim, but I guess I'm just nosey and I want to know why Joe doesn't want to give out the specs? Is it that he doesn't want someone to steal his ideas? Really there's really only so much you can do with camshaft designs and I'm sure Comp could make a grind to equal the abilities of the cam you're running by just using their generic lobe designs. I guess you're wanting to keep the car as streetable as possible while at the same time being as wicked-fast as possible. Please help me understand, why we can't know the cam specs. Later.

Joe

Bad *** video. Tell the guy that you wasted he needs to work on his RT!

Can't wait to see what drag radials and 41psi will do to my 13.7 w/ 28psi fuel pressure.

Cool runs man, and I bet you can improve with more WOT tunage!

Very nice times TRAXION. Nice car - I like that you kept the factory hood for the sleeper effect. What kind of tires are you running out back? They must be some type of drag radial to be hooking up that good. Thanks for sharing - that video is awsome!

wingnut,

255 Drag radials on stock 16" IROC rims out back. With the normal front IROC rims/tires installed the car looks totally stock. It doesn't sound stock. But it does look stock - lol.

FWIW - the guy driving the opposing car on that run was NOT the owner of the car. In the video that car went 12.9's@111mph. HOWEVER, with the proper owner in the driver's seat, the car went 12.1's@112mph with a best of 12.0. That car is an excellent car in it's own right. I just got lucky with who was driving it on that run.

hehe right on. Just looked like I saw the green a bit longer than I should have before the car moved.

But hey that's all I can be good at is RT since my car is slow!

That is a big plus point to using relatively stock size drag radials on stock rims! Very cool!

Congratulations on the new ET and mph Tim, especially with the car being in street trim.

The black car is a '92 convertible with ...

SuperRam
AFR190s
HOT Cam
406ci SBC
T56
usual mods like headers, gears, etc.

12.0's @ 112mph. With a more stout cam that car will go easy 11's. It's an incredibly torquey car and kicks butt on the road course! I'm trying to talk him into putting a real cam in there. It's losing major HP with that little baby cam. Hi Dave!

YEa I agree about the cam. My cam is even bigger than the HOT cam and I thought I was being conservative when I chose the XR276HR-12 for my little 355 !

The specs of the Comp 306 might be a good choice for his motor.

Oh, and what gears is he running?

I was running a cam almost exactly like the CC306. It's pretty much a slug cam because it doesn't turn 'on' until late in the powerband. When people talk about the CC306 it's always about the big HP numbers. But, the torque sucks. I just wanted to point this out in case anyone is considering the CC306. It's a total slug down low.

Trax,

So, you had a custom Comp Cams Cam and then pulled it out without going to the track and put this custom cam in? That seems odd that you wouldn't even test it??! Is your butt dyno that accurate?

Also, without commenting on where the duration occurs or if you have assymetrical lobes or whatever could you get us close to the cam specs? How about within 5 degrees at .050? That can't be giving away any secrets? I assume over 238 degrees.

Things I know:

76 kpa idle (ouch!)
900 rpm idle
I think you said 20d overlap at .050 specs.

Judging by those I would assume that you have a similar cam (in .050 duration only) to the one in my 406.

Also, my 406 has a 1kpa change from going from a 48mm to a 58mm throttle body. I really doubt the need for a monoblade.
Is it actually possible to acheive atmospheric pressure inside the intake at WOT? Can't you only approach it?
Anyhow, impressive times, nice work.

Ah - that's not exactly correct. I got dyno data from my CC cam and I will soon have dyno data for the Lethal EFI Cam. FWIW - there is no comparison. My butt dyno can register big gains ... and this is a big gain (not necessarily in HP but definitely in torque). Much more torque. The full story is that I custom picked my CC cam. I picked it based on research and I chose the CC specs that I had based on a dual purpose cam. I wanted that CC cam to be good for NA and good for a Supercharger. However, I came to the conclusion that I'm poor and I'll never get the SC on there. Thus, I sold all my SC parts and then decided to pick a cam strictly based on NA. The specs I picked were close to the Lethal EFI Cam. However, the Lethal is more aggressive. In short, I didn't test my last setup on the track because I knew it wasn't optimized for NA performance. Once I got my new NA cam in there I was dedicated to going to the track because now my setup is balanced, MATCHed, optimized.

Also, without commenting on where the duration occurs or if you have assymetrical lobes or whatever could you get us close to the cam specs? How about within 5 degrees at .050? That can't be giving away any secrets? I assume over 238 degrees.
Nope. No can do. I'm not a liar nor do I want to be considered one. I really meant what I said earlier when I said ... "David Vizard's book on Modifying Chevrolet Camshafts and Valvetrain Components explains the deal on cam figures vs. overall horsepower and torque. Everything that book said - matches exactly how my new LEFI cam worked." That book really tells the story on cam power.

Is it actually possible to acheive atmospheric pressure inside the intake at WOT? Can't you only approach it?
I've seen several setups that do show atmospheric at WOT.

Ok, wow, all I asked for was total duration within 5 plus or minus degrees. I didn't think that was too specific. Apparently the Dave Vizard Book has some serious hints...........

It's probably a reverse split pattern cam with some decent lift and high duration (like the LS-1 guys are starting to use).

traction was the problem... made 4 runs .. 1st 12.9, then changed to a diffrent tune 2nd run 13.8 ick lowered tire pressure/changed launch style 3rd run 13.5 and it smoked the tires to about 60 mark , 4th run re flashed to the old tune and bang 12.9.

So I'm back to where I was.

Nothing some suspension mods and new tires wont fix
2.8 60's SUCK!

I was? Just kidding. I thought that the track was awesome. Everyone was hooking up great. I pulled my 1.62 60ft with zero wheelspin. The owner of that nice '92 convertible also layed down some sweet 60ft times too and he's got a T56. Were you running Drag Radials?

Alright, man, I'll just hurry up and run out and buy the David Wizard book. lol. Since I never got a reply and others haven't about the cam, I guess the only thing I can do is laugh when thinking about the"secret" cam specs of your cam. Woo hoo. Keeping cam specs unknown sounds somewhat childish, I don't car what the heck the reason is, but you are a Mod, right? I guess the car runs though...

1bad91Z, I've heard about those reverse split cams on the vette forum. 89Vette is running one w/ his SR and AFR's. He's the C4 guy that I know did this and he never posted the results w/ this cam.

Traxion made a agreement with Lethal EFI Joe Overton that he wouldn't give out the cam specs. I'm sure if they didn't agree on it, Traxion would be more than happy to give out the cam specs. Hes giving out hints on where to find the cam specs without himself giving them out.

Thanks derfrank. Exactly.

Don't you think I would like to tell everyone? Of course I would. However, that's not how I operate. Joe specifically requested that I not tell anyone. That was the deal I had to make. So, I told Joe I wouldn't tell. So, I am not. Me thinks that camarojoe is not an honest person if he doesn't understand keeping your word I'm sorry that you want to trash me because I'm an honest person and I don't lie.

Trax, I'm sorry about saying what I did if it made you think I sound dishonest. Honestly I respect you and your knowledge more than 99.999% of the people on this board if that says much. You know 100x's more than me about these cars and I'll admit it. The only reason I said what I did is that I kinda feel after all the stuff you've given these boards, why can't you post the specs or at least talk to Joe again and see if he still cares if you post em. It would make some of us happy to know what parts add up to make your car scream. This was my thinking on why I wrote what I did. So that's my reasoning. But know after thinking about it, you really don't owe us jack, but if you are able to post the specs at a later date, I'd love to know them. Good luck getting some 11.50's.

Joe
