Emissions Exempt
ok so on my next inspection i'll be exempt (less than 5000 miles) and i had one shop tell me that it still means i need everything on (cat, air pump, all smog) it just won't need a sniffer test. then i had another shop tell, atleast with the exhaust, that i don't need a cat, i just can't have any leaks. my thing is if i still need everything then y not still run the stiffer...there wouldn't be a point to be expempt....so can someone please let me know what shop is correct, i live in PA if that matters

with PA i think it's if u have classic or antique plates and if u drive less that 4500 or 5000 miles a year (i think 5000). i know about the 5000 bcuz that's what my old boss did with his 99 TA, he just drag raced it so it was less than 5000 a year

In pa, Harrisburg’s definition of a collectible is as follows” “a reconstructed motor vehicle, but not a reproduction thereof, substantially modified from the manufacturer’s original specifications and appearance and maintained in a collectible condition as determined by the Department of Transportation. NOTE: Generally, substantial changes to the engine and exhaust systems must be done to qualify the vehicle as a collectible motor vehicle. If the extensive changes are other than the engine, be sure to give very detailed and specific information in section C on the front of this form. In addition, the vehicle must primarily be used for show and must appear to be in “show” condition in the photographs submitted with the application.” To receive this plate, you must give a detailed description of the modifications to the car and besides the 4 body photos, 2 more pictures, one of the motor and one of the exhaust system are required.
The inspection rules for these plates are as follows: “Classic and collectible vehicles are subject to vehicle safety inspection annually. Antique vehicles operated exclusively between sunrise and sunset are exempt from normal lighting requirements of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, but must have their original lighting equipment. Antique vehicles are not subject to the annual safety inspection. Antique, classic and collectible vehicles are not subject to emissions inspection.”
ALSO antique tags require a 25 year or older car.

well br()bert, i don't relly know what that has to do at all with my question. but as far as a classic plate goes...i don't want one, the car has to be stock with a classic plate. at our local car show, a guy with an 84 Z28 got classic plates and all that was needed was 1 side shot 1 front 1 rear and 1 engine. they denide him the plate bcuz he had aftermarket wheels on, so he had to put the stock wheels back on to take the side pic again and he got his plate. but i know that if i drive less than 5000 miles a year i'm emission exempt. i just need to know if a cat is emissions or the inspection...like i sed b4, some sed the inspection was to make sure there wasn't any exhaust leaks and others sed the cat was part of the inspection. soo that's what i need to know.

Well why dont you go to an inspection station and ask?
BTW no one said it HAS to be your car you take pictures of when you apply for any types of plates!
hint hint.

hint hint. I live in PA in Dauphin county. If you have less than 5000 miles a year, you do not need any emission garbage on yor car. all you need is to pass a safety inspection. now this is dauphin county, and we just got hit with emission testing this year. It may ba different where you live.

I live about 20 miles north of Harrisburg. If your car is a '95 or older, you just need a gas cap check (to make sure it holds pressure), and a visual emission inspection. Your cat, air pump, air inj tubes, etc. must be there. They don't have to work, but must be there. '96 and newer get the gas cap check and a code scan (to make sure there are no emission codes). Also everything must be there. If you drive less than 5000 miles a year, you don't need anything. This is for most counties around Dauphin.

Here are a couple of helpful links:
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms...ets/fs-ant.pdf
http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/06...hap177toc.html
The second one is lengthy but is the actual code (law) for emissions requirements in PA. If a vehicle is exempt there is no emissions checks what-so-ever, not even a visual (there used to be a visual on exempt vehicles, no longer).
One thing about a cat is that it is a federal offense to remove it.

If your car came from the factory with a catalytic converter its supposed to always have one. Its a federal offense to remove one but if your city/state dosen't inspect then you really shouldn't have anything to worry about.

so far this is what i've got from them
"Generally speaking, if the vehicle has been owned for one year and driven less than 5,000 miles in the prior year it is exempt from having emissions testing completed. However, you must go to an emissions inspection station to have the vehicle's mileage verified and receive an exemption sticker. You can do this when they get their safety inspection if the station performs both types of inspections."
so now i have that out of the way. so i'm exempt. they just need more info and they r gona send the info on what exempt IS.
EDIT: o ya, i don't have a problem with having a cat or cats (might go duals) but can i buy them without the air tubes to them?? i'm pretty sure buy not 100%

Its a real pain in the a$$ to get tested. I don't drive my car a whole lot, MAYBE 3000 a year, if that. I'm gonna check with the emmisions place in a few days to see if I can get away with what Chio987 is talkin about. Supreme Member

Re: Emissions Exempt
I'm currently living in Florida and in the process of stripping my RS of all emission controls, should I ever move back to pa I'll just swap in my spare cluster when I go for inspection, leave it in for a month or so then swap back to my real one. By using an extra speedo you can put as may miles on a year as you like "up to 5000" wink wink.
