Started paint on the TA today.....

This is a project my buddy Nate and I have been working on a while. It's his '85 WS6. We started the first round of painting today and wanted to get some input.

Here's the engine compartment. It is bright silver now. Tomorrow we will be doing a kewl paint effect that looks like the paint crystalized. I will get some more pics when we get that done.

Also, check out the firewall. He's got an unbelievable amount of hours getting it smooth. I think he's got more hours in on the passenger side of the firewall than most people do in the whole paintjob.

Attention to detail, I like that. Just think how much $$ you save doing the job yourself.

Hopefully something. The booth the car is in is actually built inside his 3 car garage (sideways) . It's like 22 feet by 28 feet. Built it out of 2x4's and 6 mil plastic. We even put a door in it.

Silver is a pretty common base to put down when doing any kind of candy or marbleized custom paint. He said that they aren't done in the engine bay yet. I wanna see what they're getting ready to do.

Even if the engine bay stayed silver I think its a nice contrast to the body color.

That looks really nice, and that smooth firewall will really get some attention when you open the hood.

Thanks for all the great comments. Good news, Nate's cowl hood is in and he is driving up to VFN today to get it. That puts a hold on the paint tho...... here is a sneak peak of what it is gonna look like tho. The main color will be black and the crystals peaking thru will be the silver, and maybe some kandy red too!

Very cool!

Why not go with a tubular K-member while you are at it?

The paint is black. It is a GM shade from '85, but not sure what they actually used it on. I will have to talk to him about the tubular K-member. I think he's more into the straight line speed tho. Hood's here tho and that's a good thing. VFN makes a killer cowl hood. We should get a shot at doing the crystalized paint on next wednesday or thursday. I am sure to have some pics of it by then.

That's a secret for now. I will have to see what he wants let out before it's done. It will be a SBC with an automatic behind it.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Please check back often as hopefully this will turn into a build-up thread on this car. We've got some tricks instore that hopefully will be new or not overdone anyway.

Tubular K member is even better for straight line speed. drops more weight. Check the suspension board their is a group purchase going on now. Good deal if he can afford it.

For the outer wells, they are being coated with a hard urethane coating (kind of like bedliner material). The inner wheel wells are getting painted with the same as the firewall.
Tubular K member is even better for straight line speed.
I will have to check that out. I was wanting one for my Z28.

That product is called Lectra, and the site is www.lectrafinish.com

If you do use that Lectra product, word of advise would be to watch your booth humidity. Not enough humidity, and it dries flat, too much and it dries as "runs" instead of crystals.

I decided to do something other than the crystal effect. It will go along with the paint job that I am planning for the rest of the car.

It's gonna be at least summer before this one gets done, if you can wait that long. The booth is in crazyn8's garage, the same place the car's gettin built. PM him or me.

Thanks for all the great comments. N8's car has changed directions a little bit. We tried out the Lectra finish and it turns out, the humidity was a little too high for the stuff to dry properly. Who'd a thought?? Anyway, there is a new plan of attack on the engine bay. I don't think N8 wants me to let the secret out just yet. I'm gonna go check it out tonight or tomorrow. I think it's gonna be killer.

It looks very well done but why go thru all the work of smoothing everything out if the work is going to be hidden by all of that? It looks real cluttered.

I looked awesome just silver. And I guess I'm glad you didn't leave it that way, cause its my goal this winter on my TA.

The workmanship does look great though.
