mine is mounted on the right side of the dash right above where the a/c controls are. I screwed the bracket into the side of the dash. if you take the plastic piece off that holds the cigarette lighter you can get to the back side of that piece and bolt the bracket on so it is more rigid. Oh yeah, the tach I mounted is a 5" autogage w/shiftlight

Does it count if it's in the same spot as the original? I like it there. EDIT: See further in the post for installed pics.

Ok, now it's in the car, and working. BTW, does anyone else use the 5" tach and speedo? I see a lot of 3 5/8.

how hard is it to make a custon gauge cluster like that? How's the tach hook up? I wanna make one for my firebird, I really like the stock locations for everything but dislike the inaccuracy of everything.

what year is your car Eats because im pretty sure that the 91-92 style dash is physically smaller than the 80's style dash.. if you notice, the 90's dashes had half moon gauges and teh 80's had full circle

wonder if it's just becuase of the electric speedo, If that's the case it might work if you switch to cable driven speedo...

That's NICE ! :hail: :hail: :hail:
Can you say how much that cost after all was done?
Was there any complications? It looks pretty straight forward.

That's because you're looking in the wrong place. Check this link:

All, you can't see it in the previous pics, but there is a fuel gauge beneath the tach. Showing it here, hopefully without objection.

Saigon_Bob, it's an 88. I haven't worked with the 90's style, so I have no idea what would fit. Given the sizes you said, I'm thinking you'd have to go with 3 5/8 speedo/tach vice the 5 inchers.

Scorpner, everything was straight forward except for one electrical connection that I had to guess on. Got it right the first time, so I'd say it was fairly easy. As far as total cost, let's see:
Gauges: $450 $570 if you add the two in the pod
LED's: $19
Metal: $15
Misc: $30
Labor: Priceless

I'd guess just over $500 for everything for the dash.

Nocturnall, if you want, I can send you pics of the whole process, and let you decide. I didnt' think it was too hard, I made lots of templates, out of paper, cardboard, sheet metal, and finally the steel. I already had most of the tools, but had to buy a hole saw.

did that fit right in or did you have to shave it out a bit? I've seen a couple people use the factory plate but never had a chance to ask them about it. Also is that the 5" tach?

yes its a 5"

it wasnt perfect, but it was so close no one noticed... really it was ment as a "strap mount" external tach.. not a in-dash tach.

i took a piece of sheetmetal and put a bow in it.
then cut the round hold to JUST fit the back of the tach in..
then as i screwed down the sheetmetal to the gauge cluster, it flattened... of course that makes it so the hole isnt round, and it compresses on the gauge... holding it firmly in place.

i did a post on it years back when i first did it.

got them at the auto parts store, here they are Advance, but I'm sure you could find them at like a Kragen, Checker, maybe Pep Boys. Depends on where you live.
I didn't like the ones at Radio Shack, they were too little.

I like that, but was wondering about how to mount it. So, went my way. I'll bet it's nice having a playback right in the dash.

here's a cool setup for the 90-92 style dash.
It's not mine, but I saved this pic somewhere cause it looked good. Look really close at the radio bezel. There's some gauges there tooooooo.

My radio bezel is going to have the nitrous pressure gauge, and a switch panel for the aux fuel pump, and various other things. I'll post when that's done, but that won't be for a couple months.

Put the tach where I have mine. It's out of the way and looks great. The biggest problem with adding a tach to my car was that it couldn't be all that big. Autometer Monster tachs are too big to be mounted on the left of the dash due to the angle the windshield is at. I found that the best tach to mount was an autogage 3 3/4" tach. They make 3 types: one with a shift light on the face, one with a shift light on the outside of the dial, and one without a shift light. I own the one with the light on the face. The face is the same size as my other larger guages and it looks great at night with my dash. Anyway, it's just an idea.

I HAD a radio in my bezel, until my car was broken into and some punk stole it. Paid $300 for it 6 years ago.

Funny thing is, he didn't touch the $700 worth of brand new Autometer Ultra-Lites. Moron.
