In-line fuel pump pics??

Does anyone have a good photo of an in-line [external] fuel pump installation? Something that shows the location and the brackets/mounting hardware and fuel lines etc??

Here is my Aeromotive A1000. Its bolted to the side of the spare tire well. The second filter could be inline, just like the pre-filter, but I wanted to keep it as far from the exhaust that I could. The second filter is mounted to the trunk bottom, about 10 oclock in the pic.

This is basically the set up under the hood, at the rails.

Yes, I took all the stock stuff out, and re-sumped it with 5/8 stainless steel tubing I got from ClassicTubes. I had a new plate made of aluminum, to replace the OEM one. My machinist spun it up on the lathe. Works perfectly with the stock retaining ring, and rubber seal. Now I just have Russel bulkhead 90* fittings coming out of it. -10 for the main fuel line, -8 for the return, and -6 for the vent. I cut the OEM sending unit tubing, and split it, so I can use the fuel sender, and float. After cutting it with a Dremel, I just clamped it onto the new 5/8 line. One thing though. Now the tank will not fit correctly with the big fittings sticking out of it. I took two pieces of some 1" square wall tubing, and machined screwed them to the underside of the cars sheetmetal, where the tank fits. Now the tank has an extra inch of clearance for the fittings. It hardly affects the filler tube, as it still fits in the rubber under the fuel door.Youll have to make a spacer for the three bolts that holds that support beam, (above the panhard bar). This will have to be lowered an inch as well. Even all of the exhaust protective sheetmetal will bolt back up. Get some threaded studs at the local hardware store, and then you can simply use a nut and washer on each tank strap. IMO, this is easier than finding real long bolts for the straps. I wish I had some more pics, but I did this before joining TGO, and never thought about it.

Glad I can help. Just wish I had some pics though. This was the ONLY alternative for me, as I did not want to go with a fuel cell, and its not practical to sump the bottom of the fuel tank, because of the exhaust crossover. If you go this route, refer to your old intank assembly, so you can bend the new 5/8 line exactly like the original. When I ordered the two ft long 5/8 stainless line, I told ClassicTubes what I was doing, and they even AN flared, and put a female fitting on the line, as I did not have an AN flare tool as yet. AN flares are at a differnt angle.

If you ever look in a Jegs catalog, in the Mustang section, they have an intank assembly you can already buy that you can just drop right in a Mustang tank. If you do yours this way, thats basically what youll end up with.

Just think, you"ll never have to drop the tank again, to change a faulty pump. I can pull mine off without jacking the car up, in about three minutes.

Definatley noisy, but I dont care. If I had to do it over again, I probably would do a less overkill system. If you can handle the noise, that is the only drawback, IMO.

Im sure you will not find a quiet pump, if you are looking for a serious pump. I hear the Accel 870 pump, the Weldons, etc, are all good pumps, but I dont know how noisey they are.

Not true on the noisy pumps being the only choice. I have a Walbro and it is as quiet as a stock in tank pump. It is a very very quiet inline. Solid mounting makes loud pumps way worse too -- isolating does help.

Twin Walbro 255's should do fine for 600hp and you can keep them in the tank. about $160 -200 for the pair.
We put a pair in my friends 95 Supra with a T78 turbo kit.

PerthZ28:
The pump is a Bosch good for up to 550HP. It's mounted in my 67' Camaro 18" from the tank under the trunk. I had no choice in using a in-line because there is no room in a 67' Camaro fuel tank. It's been working fine for 6 years and app. 75000 miles. I have a stock ZZ4-TPI with the fuel pressure set to 50 lbs. My car is a daily driver.
A good rule of thumb with in-lines is to mount them close to the tank because in-line fuel pumps are better pushers than pullers.

Hi,
My 1982 Firebird has been running an inline pump since the engine was first put in back in 98. The pump is mounted in the area where the fuel filter is located. The pump is the same type of pump that is used inside of the tank. Its rated for 75PSI. I have never had a problem with the pump!

this may be a dumb question but do you have to take the old assembly out or can you just mount the new inline assembly without all of the pain of taking out the old pump.... this just sounds so much easier

Not a good idea, in fact that's a very bad idea. Your new pump would have to pull gas through your old dead pump in the tank. Won't work!!!
