Hawks 5" spoiler

This Probably sounds like a newb question but, on Hawksthirdgenparts.com it shows the 5" spoiler for 82-86, 91-92. What about the 87-90? Will it not fit on those years? Can someone please explain to me why. This is the spoiler i'm refering to.

Thanks

Mike

looks like im the first yes. ok the 82-82 dont have a 3rd brake ligth , the 91-92 has it mounted high , it will bolt on your 87-90 but wont be legal since you wotn havea 3rd brake light . Big deal , my 85 doesnt have one legally and i dont think a cop is gonna worry about a brake light .

because if you have a 3rd brake light in the spoiler (like 87+) cars do, you cant legally take it off and replace it with aspoiler that doesnt have one.

he can say 91 and 92 legally because they used the wing instead and had the light on the hatch.

Would it be legal to replace the spoiler brake light with a hatch brake light then put the 5" spoiler in?
What about the base 87-90 Camaros without a spoiler, did they exist? If they did where is the brake light?

thats still DOT legal... so yea.

although swapping parts is always a gray area, the end result is a DOT legal setup....

Your right...i beilive they became manditory on all cars after '85 not positive though...but something like that.

Oh and just for reference, on my '92 z28 i have a third brake light mounted on the hatch...i dont use it though and ive never got pulled over for not having it. VA has strict laws too but ive got lucky they just dont notice...

it looks good in real life on SOME cars... horrible on others...

but its rarely photogenic. it looks espically good on cars with large cowl hoods... kinda balances them out.

It may be i'm not really sure, never really looked at that close. Even if it was, couldn't you use like some adhesive on it ? Like they use to hold that metal clip on rear view mirror to the glass. Just a thought.

We love the look of the extended spoiler (especially with a cowl).. there were a few things we wanted different, so we made our own.

The car is not finished yet in these pics.

Don't worry... we're not driving around in the snow! My dad needed the garage for a few hours so we had to roll it out. It comes out to 6" in the middle... thanks guys!

if by "mandatory" you mean it became hard (but not impossible) for OEMs to meet DOT approval on passenger cars without one, then yes.
there still is no law for trucks, but its such a good idea that most have it.

The Spoiler will NOT fit the 87-90 Camaro's without Drilling holes to match.

Please be aware:

The spoiler is wider then the 82-86.
Quarterpanel drilling required and Hatch holes need to be made to fit. The outter two fit right but the third inner set do not line up.

Will directly fit the 82-86 and 91-92.

Third break light is irelevant... Just as long as your tail lights work.

That spoiler was actually made from scratch by johnyIROC. He started with the stock spoiler and worked from there.

The car is filthy in those pics... I wiped off the spoiler just for the pic. The rest is covered in dust. When the wether is nicer I'll take some good pics of the entire car.

I think it looks awsome johny! ...I always loved the Bandit trans am. If you could make a mold of that think you could probalby get some good coin by selling them. However that would mean that everyone would have one, and yours wouldnt be such a respected custom thing. I could almost guarrantee that Hawks would mysteriously come out with one like yours shortly afterwords too LOL.

Very cool

Can somebody tell me how thick the fiberglass is at the the corner of the corner peices on the Hawks spoiler?

The only thing that bugs me about it is that that part is too square. Some fairly minor careful sanding before paint could take care of that.

Here's a 5 second MS Paint to give you a basic idea of what I mean. Forgive me for using your car, LT1Powered89.

you'd have to widen it but it is possible with a little fiberglass work. Prolly have to modify the end pieces too. Maybe somebody should talk hawks into making one for firebirds.
