Vortec heads and valve springs
Many of us are opting for the Vortec heads, some are saying they require a lot of machine work. Well here is a hot tip:
If you get the Manley part# 22410 springs and the part# 23652 retainers you will not have to do any machine work. The retainers add .050 to the stacking height so they will be at 1.780. The spings are 130# at 1.750 requiring a .030 shim and this will give about .040 away from the stock valve seals .
The spring coil binds @ 1.150 so that allows for at least .510 lift. They have 320# open at that lift. Oh, and the bonus, they're reasonable, about $80. And now with the SPCD base available WhaaHoo!
NOTE:
You do need to remove the flat wound dampner and cut one coil off for clearance.

Sure, those are the same springs and retainers I'm running on my car with the LT4 HOT cam and L98 heads. Thats how we found them to work with the Vortec heads.

That last note there, you have to pull out a inner dampner and cut a coil off of said dampner right? Just want to make sure I'm clear. I've been thinking about trying to come up with some setup like this or +.050 locks or something...
