Need help w/ connecting MSD coil...
Need help w/ connecting MSD coil...
I have a 91' 3.1L and a new Blaster 3 coil that I bought a while ago but have not used. I was wondering if it would be possible to connect it in place of the stock coil even though the stock one has two single-pair connectors. In the car manual wiring diagram the stock coil seems to have two primary windings, so what do I do with the extra wire?

I have an Accel Supercoil, external mount.
I have mine hooked in to the factory wiring.
My original coil died, so I removed it, in many pieces!
Mine is mounted right by the coil, on the firewall.
Perhaps, this is a guide for the mounting.
You may have to wait until you get one, here with your application.
A freind and I also mounted a MSD unit, right in teh exact same location as the original coil. Even used the same holding metal brace.
Re-read the directions, not the factory wiring set up.

The Blaster 3 coil only has two terminal posts (a positive and negative terminal)whereas the stock coil has the two connectors w/ two wires each. The directions w/ the MSD coil only give intructions on how to hook-up w/ a CD unit or an old non-electronically controlled ignition. The coil that I have is not a direct-replacement unit and I would like to know if it is possible to use it instead of having to buy a direct-replacement coil.

Keith, it's easy. It requires some splicing, but here's the quick overview. The four connectors on the GM coil are really a "bridge" to each other. The GM coil is basically two parts- a two-terminal spark coil, and a "2-to-4 connector". For instance; wire "A" on the gray connector gets connected to wire "B" from the black connector- inside the coil. Inside the coil, "gray-B" ties to "black-B".
1. Cut off the factory coil connectors (leave an inch or two in case you ever want to hook them back up) from the car's wiring.
2. Mount the new coil so it's within reach of your distributor cap. I think the MSD Blaster 3 needs to be mounted upright, right?
3. Cut yourself two lengths of wire, about 18 or 20 gauge, that will reach from the car's wiring to the location you want your new coil to be in. I'm going to call these your "MSD wires"...
4. Strip 1/2" insulation off the four wires from the car's harness, and off the ends of the MSD wires.
5. Attach the PINK/BLACK wire of the GRAY connector to the PINK/BLACK of the BLACK connector. Attach one of the MSD wires to this hookup... make them look like a "Y". Use correct methods (crimping or soldering, with heat-shrink or electrical tape).
6. Attach the BLACK/WHITE of the GRAY connector to the BLACK of the black connector. Attach the other MSD wire to this hookup. ** Note: This is where you would connect an aftermarket tachometer!
7. Take the MSD wire you connected to the PINK/BLACK wires. This goes to the POSITIVE terminal on the MSD coil.
8. The MSD wire you connected to the BLACK/WHITE & BLACK wires will go to the NEGATIVE side of the coil.
9. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks, works like a charm ( although in my car there are two solid pink and two solid whites wires only; from looking at a car manual wiring diagrams it appears that Pontiac changed wire colors between '89 and '90 )
Pinks went together on BAT side on coil, whites connect to the other terminal...

Glad it worked for you! Thanks too for the info on the wire colors!
