Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

I have a few Jeep Steering Shafts for sale. $60 each Shipped USPS (lower 48 states).
These are compressed, cleaned, painted, greased and ready to install.
These shafts make a great upgrade over the old rag joint setup.
Tightens up the steering and gives more clearance along with a cleaner look.
I spend a lot of time getting them prepped and make sure the finished product is as good as they can be. The ones i sell are separated, cleaned, sanded and painted along with little extras like spreading them so they slide right on, cleaning the bolt threads, greasing them, etc....

When you get one from me it is 100% ready to install.

Send me a PM if your interested in one.

Video of the installation of these shafts.
This in not my video but its well done.

There seems to be some conflicting opinions on whether the "d" shaped part of the column needs to be notched or not.
Here is what I discovered about the upper "D" shaped section.

The upper "D" shaft on has a "Top" & "Bottom". These have 2 flats on the sides but the rounded sides are different also. The "Top" is rounded but the "Bottom" has a flat spot for the bolt.

I originally thought the shafts did not require a notch if you align the bolt with the flat spot on the top section. However after a few tests I realized a notch is required. The notch is also a good idea to prevent the coupling from sliding down off the shaft. If you notch the flat side, a smaller grove is required.

Hopefully this clears up the mystery and helps with the install.

Here are some testimonials:

Hey Ken, got the shaft yesterday. Packing was great and the assembly was all clean and painted black. So pretty!!! I hate to put it on the car now. I think i'll let it hang in the shed and accumulate some funk before i install it. Thank the the opportunity brutha!!
Ken, Thanks again setting me up with the Jeep Steering Shaft. I hadnt any luck finding one in the Bay Area (Calif). Im sure the shaft allowed me to beat my buddy(73 Corvette) at our Autocross events. Terry
Got mine within a couple of days. Cleaned and painted, and it was excellently packed. Can't wait to put it on.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

They work on the 3rd gen Camaro's, i would imagine the Firebird would be the same.
I don't have one to check, maybe someone will chime in to verify.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

I have had many questions about the notching of the shaft so i thought some more instruction may be in order.
The notch required for the bolt has to be made on your steering column shaft NOT the Jeep Shaft.
To make things easier i used an extra steering column for the pictures. The area you are seeing is the part of the steering column that comes thru the firewall.
This is what it looks like once you remove your stock shaft.

Name: IMAG0552.jpg
Views: 961
Size: 163.6 KB

Slide the Jeep shaft on as shown.

Name: IMAG0553.jpg
Views: 1667
Size: 124.0 KB

If you look thru the bolt hole you can see where the column shaft sticks out into the opening.

Name: IMAG0560-1.jpg
Views: 941
Size: 113.8 KB

Mark the center of the bolt hole with a marker.

Name: IMAG0555.jpg
Views: 987
Size: 120.9 KB

Name: IMAG0556.jpg
Views: 951
Size: 173.7 KB

I got carried away with my die grinder so the notch is larger then it needs to be.

Name: IMAG0557.jpg
Views: 1001
Size: 108.6 KB

Now you can see the bolt hole is clear straight thru.

Bolt installed and shaft locked in from sliding off.

Hopefully this helps.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

I received mine in the mail within a few days and it looked great. Just today I was able to get out there and get it installed. To answer a listed question, all I needed was basic hand tools. I did have to tweak the brake lines a little to get the stock shaft out, but the new one went in and bolted up without problems. Altogether it was about 30 min. of time.
A quick test drive and I can feel the steering much more solid. Well worth it!

No i have never found a reason to pay their fees to sell these.
Is there a reason it would be better to sell them there than here on the message boards?

No, how much for an unpainted shaft? Can powder coat it?

I don't get them if they are not in good shape.
I have only seen 1 so far that was not usable.
These are a really good design and really don't wear out unless they are subjected to some extreme use.
I have had 4 different ones on my car, 1 or each style including 2 of the ones with the cast ends and have not been able to feel any difference between them.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

They (Jeep and Astro van shafts) do, however, introduce considerable noise into the system--at least that's been my experience.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

I didn't notice any difference on my Monte SS as far as noise.
May be different on the F-Body but the Jeep shaft does have a rubber isolator so that should help it.
Since i no longer have my 86 IROC i can't test it to see for myself. I would be curious to find out if any others have noticed this.
As you can see above I like to be as informative as i can be in my sale posts so if this is a common occurrence in the F-Body i would like to know so i can make it clear to anyone interested in doing this upgrade.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

I experienced significant power steering whine (when turning) wiith both Jeep and Astro van shafts.

EDIT: After considering, I'm not sure that 'whine' is the best term as that conjures up other problems. It's a 'rushing' noise that wasn't present with the OE shaft in place.

Re: Jeep Steering Shaft Upgrade

Went to the yard today but was only able to get a few.
I have sent a PM to those on the waiting list.
If you sent me a PM and did not get a reply today its because i didn't get enough to cover all the requests.
I am working with an out of state yard to have them bulk shipped in to me. If anyone want to get on the waiting list please send me a PM so i have an idea how many i need to get.
Thanks.
