I was working on the base for the Rx8 console I'm installing but realized that the black carpet that they sell in those rolls at Walmart is just not going to cut it. Plus I would like some also for the door panels and rear hatch area. So the big question is where can I find some new carpet that is sold by the yard, and is at the very least, the quality of stock carpeting? Also, I need it without thick rubber backing. Thanks.

If you need it to be flexible, then you can get carpet used for covering speaker boxes. The texture doesn't really look much different from the rolls of stuff that you get at wal mart, but it's much, much more flexible. You can get it from partsexpress.com or selectproducts.com.

If you're looking for an automotive grade carpet, that stuff is available from anybody who sells carpet (including me). This sounds more like what you're looking for, but make sure you're aware that this stuff is not nearly as flexible as the carpet used for speaker boxes. This stuff works great on flat surfaces or surfaces that only curve over one axis, but as soon as you start getting into complicated curves, this stuff gets a lot harder to work with.

The one nice thing about black is that even if the texture doesn't match 100%, you really don't notice it all that much. For that reason, unless the surface is flat or close to it, I'd stick with the flexible speaker box carpet. It costs a lot less, it's super easy to work with, and it looks good.
