Installed a 2001 Delco Radio/CD w/ 7 band EQ
I couldn't help it! I was at the junk yard looking for parts and this radio was in pristine condition just begging to go home with me. $35 bucks later and an evening with the dremel, it is now installed. All I can say is it sounds sooooo good compared to the stock delco that I repaired a few months ago. I also like how the lights now match the rest of the dash. Did I mention how awesome it sounds!

My 2002 GTP has that radio. I've also been planning on getting one for my 'bird when I get it running soon!
What does it look like in the day light?

Re: Installed a 2001 Delco Radio/CD w/ 7 band EQ
Overall the main part of radio is about 1/4" longer than the stock radio. The CD player is another 1/2" longer just at the top. So in all, the entire radio is about 3/4" longer than the original.
This radio was pulled from a 01 Grand Prix, so if your at the junk yard, be sure to hit all the Pontiac's, not just the Firebirds.

Re: Installed a 2001 Delco Radio/CD w/ 7 band EQ
I want to do this conversion, but I need an aux modification to the radio and I need to do the steering wheel swap because i refuse to be content with driving my GTA without steering wheel controls.
I have the uk3 option in my car and I like my steering wheel controls very much.
Anyone know if I can swap a 4th gen wheel on a 3rd gen column without major mods? Or should I be looking for an entire column.

I know the car I pulled it from had steering wheel controls. Not sure if it is directly compatible with older controls. Maybe someone on the boards can answer that has more experience with these radios.

Pretty cool.... but DAMN that radio screams cheap 90/00s chevy plastic garbage!!! BLEH
Nothing against you, I just have serious hate for the "Styling" Chevy went for back then..
The thing that's so sad about it is I personally feel the Delco third gen radios are leaps ahead nicer looking than those new Delco units... and they're pretty outdated themselves

What rear plugs do you have? Would the 1985 radio male connectors be the same as yours? I have 3 connectors. A blue, white, and some other color manybe grey with a 2 prong additional connector. Is that what you have? My radio has recently kicked on the clock which stays on so long as the ACC fues is in the car.

I have blue and white which are speakers, I have black which is power and lights and I have gray which is for steering controls. Keep in mind though I think 1988 was the first year for these plugs in our cars

I think you can buy an adapter to convert from 12 pin to 21 pin, so you can use the newer style radios.

It's a Buick radio. They came in early to mid 90's road masters and lesabres if your lucky enough to find one.The wiring is a gm standard 21 pin plug used from 89 and up.I have several of these CD players if your interested. The radios work but the cd mechanisms need to be refurbished

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. I'll have to splice in the 89 and up connector to work in my'88.

For the radio MY82ROC posted, keep a lookout for sloped front end style astro/safari vans. I have seen many with that type, for pontiac guys look for early 90s bonneville and you will get red lighting in the same unit.
It should also be noted for some reason that era of deck seems to pump out better sound then those newer bubbly looking GM units. Not only that they look better.

Re: Installed a 2001 Delco Radio/CD w/ 7 band EQ
I put the same radio as the OP in an 88 GTA. The font matches the HVAC, the red backlighting matches the dash, and the rear plugs fit without any splicing. Unless you are intimately familiar with these cars, it looks factory stock. And the good news is that perfectly functioning ones are available for peanuts because they were used in all flavors of Grand Am's and Grand Prix's in the early 2000 era that now litter every junkyard. But it does not work with 3rd gen radio controls.

I got my 1998 Trans Am radio with 7 band. The back plugs do not match the thick factory plugs on my '85. Do they make a way to adapt it?

So the 20 pin is the newer style. I saw the 21 pin being called that. Just want to make sure the link with the 20 pin is correct.

I could be wrong but I think 20 pin is a typo on the website. It was a 21 pin connector. Some if the buick/olds changed to a 32 pin in the late 90's, but that won't affect you if you're using the 4th gen style Pontiac radio. The link to that plug will work for all GM cars pre 89.

Bought this radio http://www.ebay.com/itm/281696562824?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Got the 20 pin adapter mentioned above. Plugged in. It came on. Stations work, CD player works... Screen is not working. Shows no signs of being broken. Need to know if its broken or the fact that the plug in the back center has nothing plugged into it. Not Bose, and does not appear to be Monsoon. Just a Delco from what I can tell.

Your screen backlight is burnt out. Shine a flashlight at the screen and you should see the channels changing etc. I ordered my replacment bulb from Ebay, and it is an easy replacment.
This is what you need:
