1987 GTA Question

I am interested in purchasing this GTA but I want to confirm that it is a true GTA.

Does anyone know if they ever came with these spoilers?

Thanks....

Re: 1987 GTA Question

I don't believe the GTAs could be ordered with that spoiler - even in 1987 when the GTA was first introduced and you could pretty much pick or delete common options (power windows, power locks, etc.) for the GTA in 1987 only. That decklid spoiler style would have came on the 1988 GTA Notchback along with the 3rd brake lamp underneath.

This appears to be missing the 3rd brake lamp under the spoiler for that year.

To identify a GTA without question, look at the black and white SPID sticker on the inside wall of the center console and check for Y84. Y84 is the GTA option.

If you look at the side of the rear window, there are two small dark rectangles. Those COULD be the clips for the wrap around spoiler. that is the wrong spoiler for the car. It has been over 25 years since the car was built, and people do weird things to these cars.

To make an accurate assumption we will need more than just one pic of the car, follow the link above, or (as JT said) look at the SPID, if it is still there.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

SPID was still there. It had the GTA code plus a few other goodies. It was also had the clips for the aero spoiler, owner said he did not want to buy a new one when he had the car painted a couple of yrs ago because of the price of new one($400)

We ended up buying the car. Thanks for the help guys.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

It's pretty common to see incorrect rear spoilers on 1987-92 T/As, Formulas, and GTAs. The original ones always get brittle and crack even on the low mile cars, and they cost an arm and a leg to replace. Meanwhile, the base model Firebird spoilers don't deteriorate like the aero spoilers, and are a dime a dozen at any junkyard, so lots of people have swapped them onto T/As, Formulas, and GTAs thinking that no one will care or notice. However, to me, the rear spoiler makes the car. I got lucky and found an NOS factory takeoff cheap that was already painted to match mine.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

You don't see near as many 91/92s with incorrect spoilers since they went away from the rubber w/ metal frame to a composite that doesn't have the cracking/rusting issues of the earlier ones.

Maybe they weren't as bad...mine was still cracked/broken all the way through in about 10 spots though. Then again I also had no paint left on the hood/roof, and the top of the back seat got so much sun that it had dry-rotted and ripped.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

By the way, it turns out these could be ordered with the low profile spoiler...

The RPO code is D80 for the low profile spoiler and D81 for the Aero Spoiler.

Where did you find information that says you could get the D80 spoiler on a GTA/Trans Am/Formula? D80 was the base model spoiler and once you moved up from there you got the D81. I have never seen anything that gave you the option of the D80 spoiler except in 85 and maybe 86 where D81 was optional on the Trans Am.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

Time for a stock looking, fiberglass replacement spoiler!

I am picking one up this summer from Hawks at Trans Am Nationals. That way I don't have to pay shipping on it.

BTW, it is the 30th Anniversary of Trans Am Nationals, should be a great show.

Re: 1987 GTA Question

The D80 flat spoiler was never an option on any model GTA; the D81 aerowing spoiler was standard for every single year of production.

The D80 spoiler was used only on the 1988 GTA Notchback cars, since the aerowing spoiler did not match the contour of the decklid.
