1982 Z28 originality?

Okay, a friend of mine purchased a 77K original mile 82 Z28 with a factory Borg Warner Super T10 4-speed. Does anybody know the production number on the early 82 Z28's?

Your buddy's car is 1 of 64,882. Unfortunately any options the car has cannot be used to break down the production any farther. You can guestimate but there is no way to be 100% accurate But being a 4 speed does make it unusual. How about posting some pictures?

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

I disagree with the 4 speed option being rare. The majority of 82 Pace Cars advertised are advertised as "rare 4 speed". If the majority of them are listed as "rare 4 speed", then how rare can they be.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

I was mainly curious as to how rare the BW Super T10 4-speeds were. I'll get some pics today-its black with beautiful tan interior-its been under a cover for the last 19 years so I'm doing a gentle cut/buff to bring the original finish back.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

The factory 4 speed 82 Z28's are rare, if you look at potential survival rates this far down the line, and how many may have been built. Not common even when new. My 82 was a late car with the Saginaw 4 speed that was used as a stand in for the Super t10 late in the model year. My car was the only one I have ever seen in person with the Saginaw. A cousin of mine had a ST10 car. All of the others I knew of around here were autos. Most cars were hard loaded, and the manual trans was not generally part of that picture. So, yes, they are scarce, were built in substantial numbers, but not that common compared to the autos. Certainly a conversation item these days at the cruise night, for sure. Post pics of the car if you can. Thanks!

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

Right: the majority of the 4-spd cars got the Saginaw 4-spd {insert gagging and barfing noises here}. Just at a guess, let me emphasize the word guess, I would guess that around 20-25% or so of Z28s were 4-spd at that time, and around 20-25% of those got the T-10. So the total # of T-10 cars was probably something in the range of 3-4000. Not "rare" by any means; after all, it IS a "mass produced" consumer good; but not particularly common, either.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

Here's a few pics I snapped...I think my buddy is going to fix a couple things, look for a few OEM trim pieces and offer it for sale. I just want to help him make sure it's 100% correct. For having 77K on it and being under a cover for the last 19 years...it starts right up and needs the AC charged. The rear exhuast is crazy-it has a single pipe catback style but then has 2 small elbow extensions going into another straight pipe width ways and each routes into a muffler about the size of a small phonebook and them curves out the back on each side-weird.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

Nice car! The Saginaw had reverse to the left and back vs the left and up for the ST10. Great find, and an unusual one these days, to have any 82-84 in correct form and striping.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

The non correct parts on this car from what I can tell is that he needs to locate the correct head unit. And the hood struts need replaced too. The first thing I was happy to see was that the dashpad was mint. Unusually though, not many options like power windows or locks. Even the metal around the hatch is still nice....no scratches at all on any of the glass panels....you can tell its never really been a daily driver type car even back in the day.

NICE !

I really dig '82 Z28 ST-10 cars "rare" or not ... mine will be probably one of 3 or so 3rd gens at UTAH's largest show over the 4th weekend coming up (almost 100 cars) ... so for me it's nice to see any clean 3rd gen anywhere

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

This car is a pretty clean survivor....Robert (the guy who "rescued" it) charged the AC today-just pulled it down and charged it with R12. He finished buffing it out and it looks great for being original paint. He told me if I wanted it $6500 buys it-I'm seriously thinking about it.

Re: 1982 Z28 originality?

The paint was faded pretty bad BUT....it wasn't anything a light cut/buff couldn't bring back! The doors have ZERO sag issues....they close so nice its scary....lol
