Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Another day filled with wire brushing and painting

Spent a few hours trying to get the control arm bushings out with a ball joint press before giving up. I decided to take it to a shop when my energy suspension bushings arrive.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Ended up getting some help from a friend and used the ball joint press to remove and install my new energy suspension control arm bushings. Took 3 hours and destroyed the fresh coat of paint on them but it's done, ball joints and all. Unfortunately i'm traveling for the holidays and wont get to work on my baby till after christmas.

I will never try to remove factory control arm bushings again.... I will pay a shop with the correct press.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Installed new brakes, hoses, and new calipers today
The old owner actually did an upgrade and had slotted drilled rotors that are in perfect shape!! Not one grove.

The rotor isnt spinning very well, the brake pads are rubbing... is this normal?
Do they fix themselves when i bleed the brakes and start pumping the caliper?

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Well i sent in my rear left caliper to get rebuilt in Chicago.
Here my vendor review i started:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/afte...aliper-co.html

When I get it back ill bleed the brakes then get the car to the driveway so i can pressure wash the engine bay before i paint.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Ok guys i need some advice with what color to paint these wheels.
The gold is in good shape, so i was thinking about leaving the gold as is. Then painting the raw aluminum satin black.
The car is going to be repainted when i finally get her running and she'll be victory red and have gloss black racing stripes.

Any pictures of this done or any ideas are welcome. Please and thank you.

The wheels are already prepped just waiting on a final decision.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Maybe just paint the gold black or something I think it'll just clash to much with that paint job too many colors

Well the interior is the same gold color thats why i was thinking of leaving the gold.

edit: i agree though that i should replace the gold with black but i dont want to destroy the factory gold color... you know what i mean?

ps: how about i just leave the stripes on the spokes gold and the rest black?

Yea I think it'll look great with gold strips instead to compliment the wheels and interior just my opinion. Were you thinking full length strips or hood to trunk?

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Yea that's a better look have you considered gold strips? If u have to have them at all. My iroc is blue with gold decals interior and wheels also I love the gold ascents it seems like every one I see has grey or black. I plan on keeping the color scheme just updating the wheels (something gold) and engine (ls hopefully this summer)

All i see in my head is a mcdonalds car if i did gold racing stripes. It would look more like a ***** than a muscle car to me. Or did you mean gold molding/pinstripe?

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Lol ok you have a point there, didn't even cross my mind but the gold decals wouldn't be bad either I like the look of the louvers, vents, what ever on the hood so I think strips would just make them look out of place and bad

3m painters tape. Take your time masking and it should turn out fine.

Just my opinion, I'd leave them aluminum/gold and clear them.

Car needs to be black with gold ground effects and gold stripes and those would fit perfect

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

I think I finally decided on my engine. 350 vortec from herb. 325hp roller long block for 2k. Can't wait for that tax refund.

Oh i also finally did the title transfer on the camaro its finally mine haha.
Would have sucked if it came back stolen since i did get the title from someone who never had it transferred to them....

ps. if anyone sees a good deal on a used vortec tpi manifold pls lmk.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Ok update time:

I'll have the money needed for my motor at the end of March
But.... I think im going to use that money on this 89 Toyota pickup...

http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/cto/4301855904.html

I still havent decided but I think im going to get the truck instead.
I negotiated the owner down to a much more fair price.

Can anyone tell me if i should put the torque arm or driveshaft in first?
What brand/part # trans/torque arm mounts are those? Also what part # are the 2 round trans mount/crossmember pieces?

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Toque arm is in.
Drive shaft is also in.
PITA lots of hammer motivation even with a nicely sanded slip yoke and greasing.
Replaced the u joint to the rear end. Had no idea how to do the ujoint to the tranny so left the 30 year old stock one in...

Tomorrow im going to work on replacing the door hinge bushings.
Should be tons of fun. Wish me luck or post some advise on the best way to go about this. Doors are off already.

Try a torch. I can't remember who used them, but some u-joints were retained by an injected plastic. I believe that the replacement ones are retained by a clip.

Re: 1985 Iroc Complete build

Did my driver side replacement doors's bushing kit... wow what a pain to do the upper hinge.

I'm working on getting the proper tpi manifold right now.

Also ill be ordering the 2460 hooker headers http://www.ebay.com/itm/111059712073

While i have your attention does anyone know of a good cap, rotor, coil, wire, and module to get? I'm thinking red everything and getting the coil in cap combo. Ive been searching but im not sure what is computer friendly and what is for carb motors.

Thanks guys.

as far as the cap, rotor, and coil goes I am running a MSD Cap & rotor and a MSD coil with Taylor wires with good luck

As far as the module goes I am running the stock one. Even if you got a MSD 6AL it would still run through the factory style module
