BADNBLK's 1990 IROC: Project I don't know what I'm doing anymore...
Well, there isn't much more of an explanation other than I am a sucker for good deals, and who can resist a 1990 IROC L98...
So just about two weeks after selling my 1991 Z28 convertible project, this falls into my lap, or I at least found it and was able to strike a deal on it. Best news is my wife didn't have a heart attack when I came home late from work dragging home another "turd".
So I bought it from the son of what he thinks was the original owner. The kid has had the car for the last 10 years, since his dad's passing, and had just purchased a house and needed to free up some cash. The car is straight, and really very original, with K&N air filters, Flowmaster muffler, and an aftermarket CD player are the only changes from stock. It's paint is oxidized, suspension loose, and interior getting worn, but not a complete loss.
I haven't been home early enough to take any daylight pics, so pics from the previous owner is all I got. More to come!

Well I kinda almost forgot about this thread, but haven't forgot to work on the car.
What was never shown was the Plasti-dip abortion the previous owner applied, as he says the paint was so bad he was affraid it would never sell.... So I needed to get that off to see what I was working with, and what was hiding.
Here it is SOAKING in WD40 to loosen the Plasti-dip to be pressure washed off...
Here was the surprise... He had rattle can primered the car before plasti-dipping... THANKS.
I threw a set of tires on it, and polished up the chrome (which was covered in overspray). I washed with dish soap and a scuff pad trying to even up the rattle can stripes a bit, but didn't help...
So I named it the Chalk Roc, and we have been taking turns doing burnouts around the shop and such. My service advisor taking it out for a spin...
Moved onto the interior. Installed a better dash pad, with only one large crack, replaced shifter plate, console lid, switches, door panels, door pulls, and a few misc parts. Recovered the seats with original washed up seat covers that had little to no wear. I think they turned out great!!!

I stripped them from two sets and picked the best of the best to make one great set. I made a Craigslist add looking for seats and that I'd how I got my non torn drivers seat for cheap.

I think for a driver it's an acceptable solution. As for tips, a good set of sturdy dikes to pinch and twist the hog rings out. Hog rings hold everything together. Take your time and don't yank or pull as you can rip the original covers very easy. Slowly pull the foams from the back as to not tear it up. One set was hog ringed to the frame. You'll see where hog rings are on the foam as they usually are rusty in the area. When you get ready to go back together, borrow a shark handheld steamer and inject the foam with the steam. You'll watch it swell up as the cells of the foam are rejuvenated. Very important if you want the covers to fit well without having to hand stuff with cotton stuffing. You can always ask me any other question you may have during the process, if you need. Pm me and I'll give you my number to text or call if you need too.

I decieded that I need to paint this car... and I'm gonna do it myself. I feel like my underhood paint on BADNBLK turned out really nice, so hopefully this will too...
This is the last assembled pic of CHALKROC before paint....
Spraying color tonight, so maybe I'll have something to show tomorrow

GRRRRRRRR!!! I was prompted to update this thread, so I try to upload about 45 pics from my phone to Photobucket, and somehow they have now disappeared... Not happy. I guess the "progress" pics will have to be skipped. "Finished" pics soon

Re: BADNBLK's 1990 IROC: Project I don't know what I'm doing anymore...
After some screwing around in the "Cloud" I was able to get some of my pictures back. I'm still searching for the in primer pics, and such... But here are some updates.
NOTE... I'm no professional painter. This is my first complete paint job. I'm not posting the pics to be nitpicked on my method, materials, results. I love pro tips if you got one feel free to advise. I painted it to look better than before, not to be a show car haha.
Obviously missing pics there is steps missing from my pics...
First "wet" coat of clear going on.
One of the inbetween coats not sure which one
Another coat of clear, or at least another angle
Final coat of clear.

Re: BADNBLK's 1990 IROC: Project I don't know what I'm doing anymore...
Since I am not a painter... I have to be a sander... I got a little bit of air born crap in the upward areas (sprayed open air/no booth) and the finish had a bit more orange peel than I was hoping for, so I got to spend some time with Mr. 1500GRIT wet sanding much more than I ever would want too haha
My best friend helping me out
All sanded and ready for heavy cut polish with 3M Perfect it on a wool pad.
I polished with a 4 step system from Adams Polishes AFTER the initial cut of 3m. I performed the complete process on the hood as I wanted to see it was all gonna work out...
This is after the entire car had the 3M polish and was washed before starting the Adams Polished steps.

Re: BADNBLK's 1990 IROC: Project I don't know what I'm doing anymore...
Got all the lights put back in it (new headlights - great time to do it), most of the emblems, and cleaned up trim, windows, jambs etc... Its starting to look like a decent car again!!!
Next stop, it goes back to my shop where I can work on it during lunch breaks easier for decal installation (black/blue - like factory), install outer window sweeps, polish the glass, and re-seal the windshield... then give overall clean up and for sale sign

You obviously are not wearing your glasses! HAHA I did polish them and they really turned out nice. I have yet to finish the final "detail/polish" with all the clean up stuff as I'm still working on the outside of it, but soon.

Thank you! I'm happier with each new part that gets hung.
On the IROC they are sylvainia stock replacements. On my 91 they are Skinnyboy lights projector hid retrofit lights. Quad HID with switch back demon eye and halo.
THANK YOU!

Honestly it has held up very well. If the foam is still intact it would always be the option I would choose versus new foam. I had done this to about 4 sets of third gen seats and none have felt like I needed to re-do it. I have also not kept any of those cars for longest at almost 2 years with limited use... so might be different with a daily?

Re: BADNBLK's 1990 IROC: Project I don't know what I'm doing anymore...
Oh I kinda forgot... I sold this car a little while back. I think I still have a couple pictures of it that I have not posted here that I will post to kind top off the thread.
Fun car that ran really hard for what it was... stock. I'm excited to say that my fleet is trimmed down to 3 Camaros. I just sold one of my 92's to my best friend as a project, and I'll get to hopefully try some really cool stuff on it with his money. I'll post up about it when we finish the 70 nova we are buttoning up.
