87 camaro z28 convertible build

Hi everyone so this is my 87 camaro that has been in my family for almost 20 years. I recently bought it from my brother a few months ago and have done a lot of work to it. Here are some pictures of what has been done.

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

Is the original console in the car with the RPO codes?
Also does this car have the "special edition badge or the 29th Anniversary map pocket on the dash?

I would have to check the console when I get home. No it doesn't have the badge/pocket. The engine bay had parts that were yellow and there's parts were the blue paint is chipping and it's yellow underneath

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

I'd research the car more. According to ASC no yellow Z28 or IROC convertible ever rolled off their line in 87.
Must have the RPO sticker with your cars VIN on it to prove it.
I assume this is a 6th digit of the VIN #2 car.

VIN won't tell you much but 8th digit being an 8 or F would say Z28 or IROC.
You need to find the label inside the console with all the codes.

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

H= LG4, i believe, base line eng.Iroc wouldve been L69 at least, Z28 possibly LG4 std.Someone correct me if im wrong though.
Regardless it sure looks like a factory yellow car, which is pretty rare for 3rd camaros. That alone makes it desirable.More so if its a factory conv/yllw car, but i would change it back to yellow.Keep up the good work.

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

Unfortunately the SPID contains all the RPO codes for the car. It is like the fingerprint for the car that contains the VIN. Without it, it is hard to document the way it came originally.
You might try & research the site to find out if Chevrolet history archives might be able to pull up something solely based on the VIN.

Was that car originally yellow? If so, it confirms that it was an IROC-Z and would be the only yellow, '87 convertible I've ever seen

You may have a 1 of 1 there!

Good luck!

In 87 it could have started life as a Sport Coupe in yellow....? If you have an F (probably) or 8 as the 8th digit of the VIN TYEN it would confirm100% IROC.
Although all the IROC Anniversary cars were TBI as an automatic (only TPI was available with 5 spd). Your's being a 6th digit 2 car could have been a TPI or TBI.

The non-IROC yellow was a sort of beige color, no?

This one looks like yellow-gold, or whatever the '85-'87 IROC-Z yellow was called.

True. You're right. I didn't think about the color variation.
That SPID sure would make it more desirable.

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

This is an ASC special edition 87. Wonder where the Special Edition tag ended up. I bet this car originally had yellow paint, tan interior & tan top.
This "cap" molding hid the holes for the original rear spoiler. A shame it's been so modified because it was the ONLY 1 in 87.

Nice. What color is your 87 originally.
Does your 87 have the spoiler piece too ?

Re: 87 camaro z28 convertible build

Before we start jumping to a 1 of 1 conclusion, we need more information. Also, the LG4 was available in all models of 1987, including the IROC-Z.

If the dash doesn't have the special edition plate, or any markings for it, is the car an ASC conversion? If it isn't, then that would explain why ASC said they've never done a yellow Z28 or IROC-Z in 1987.

Those Special Edition plaques are easily removed & judging from this car it has had a few lives. It sure looks like an ASC conversion & sure looks yellow but a LONG way from how it ever came new. It would be quite a project to get it back to original as delivered new.
1 of 1 is almost trivial unless it was going back to original.
Once the floorboards are cut away it's going to be an even tougher car to bring back to original.
SPID missing is also a tough document to replace. We'll just say it's possible to be 1 of 1 but without two major pieces of the puzzle, it's just another Camaro.

The core support, which also has yellow showing through, has a trim tag. Those tags stopped in '85.

Something is definitely askew here. It's not unusual for a car to have it's core replaced after an accident, but the fact that the original paint is such an obscure color, and that it matches what was under the seats, really makes me believe that the core support and trim tag are original.

I'm curious what the 10th digit of the VIN is. "H" would be 87, as the owner believes the car to be. "F" would be 1985, "E" would be 1984, "D" would be 1983, "C" would be 1982. The trim tag on the core support will have the last 6 digits of the VIN. That should match up to the last 6 of the VIN under the windshield. The VIN on the windshield should match the VIN on the title.
