Finally made it into the 12's at last!

New best times this weekend of 12.97 and 12.90.

My 60 foot time was finally respectable. Best of 1.788. I think that's pretty good personally considering my prev best was 1.90. And the killer thing is all I did was turn the boost up from 11psi to 12.5 and made a result like I did.

One proud owner of a iron headed V6 right now. Still curious of what the 2 step and antilag would net but for the time being, its a pretty fast lil V6 out at the track.

Heres the pass on vid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szknh...ature=youtu.be

Heres the slip. I know the rt isn't the best but the run was a good one time wise.

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

Hey congrats! Been telling you all along that you already had a twelve second car, just needed to get that sixty foot down, and you did, great job. You must have been so happy, that is awesome, and you did all the work yourself, that is the part you should be thrilled about. Built not bought, great work. You now have the fastest factory V6 (2.8/3.1) ever on this board...

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

actually hes 3rd place for fastest iron headed engine , 2nd for a 3.1

theres a ton left in his car and i mean a ton that 61mm compressor is just starting to get into its efficiancy range now, right around 15/16psi is going to be the sweet spot with that turbo

if he leaves everything alone and just goes out with the antilag system on the line he should turn some 12.50-60's

if he buys that converter from deathstar he should be able to go 12.2ish

by all rights he should be the first 2.8/3.1 engine into the 11's , but he wont be if i have anything to do with it , the blower on the 3.1 i was building has to many issues , so im building another 3.1 turbo car

Thanks fellas. It sure was a amazing achievement for me to accomplish getting this car going as fast as it did. I hope to continue to progress though the year and get a tad faster if I can.

No. For starters, I said he has the fastest 3.1 on this board, I wasn't referring to other boards with members who run iron heads on other engines in other vehicles, and two, there are no 12 second time slips from any member on this board running a factory 3.1. People say they have, but the proof is never there. He is the first on this board, and he proved it...

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

I've never seen a 12 second slip on a 3.1L thirdgen to be honest. But besides that stuff.....

I am just happy that I finally got there. Rob and Dave, though thick and thin, you were there when I first put it together and asked all those dumb questions. To be honest I never thought id take a 17 second V6 and make the 12's and keep it a streetable car. I remember when 14s were just a dream. Its amazing what one can do with some advice, a lot of research, and a lot of trial and error. Thanks again to all the friends on here that have given me guidance and advice when I needed it.

But you all know how addictive boost is. On to the next goal we go.

if i was you, my next goal would be 110mph, that's not quite 11.99, but still a REALLY awesome, realistic, obtainable goal, lol. i make my goals small and easy, so i can be surprised, lol.

I think now maybe you can understand why I was so adamant about you running a 2-Bar MAP sensor back then. It was nothing against Code $59, but I knew way ahead of time that when you started tuning and running it on your own, that you would immediately realize that 15+psi is not a game, and I didn't want you to lose resolution by running a 3-BAR and never needing it. At this point, you can try to squeeze in another tenth or two in the sixty foot, and bring that ET down to low twelves, but in order to trap faster, you'll need to up the boost. Tune needs to be dead on though once you reach closer and closer to 20-psi, so watch those afr's, watch your timing, watch those air temps and watch those EGT's if you can...

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

Nova your right. Smaller goals are a lot more easy to achieve. I don't plan to have a 11.99 goal as that's just to risky for my set up and is a ways away. But I do feel that mid low 12s are obtainable by late season. Gotta love EFI and boost sometimes as its so easy to squeeze extra HP out of it with just the right tune. Right now id just like to see that the car is picking up 60 foot times as I learn the launch.

@rob. I do understand why you said a 2 bar was sufficient back when I started all of this. Even though I have all the stuff to do the 2 bar set up, Im just so use to $59 and understand it pretty well, that I would stick it out with that as long as I kept a gm ecm.

I don't think I would go playing with the boost too much. Im still concerned that would wound the car if I jacked it to hard even if it the tune was spot on. I have thought about just playing with the boost .25psi at a time on the beginning of the track. As I can dial in the boost to be higher at the start and tam it back off by the 1/8 and farther. Well see though. If I get to actually use the 2 step anti lag and push mid 12's with just the 12.5psi Im running now then ill just leave it be for the season. And when it gets close to fall ill go and try to turn up the boost safely. Id rather be tearing out a engine this winter then this summer. It does make me laugh that this little engine that I payed 200 bucks for last fall is such a good engine when you tune it right.

@Andrew, it takes baby steps. Realistic goals are the best. So you better get that 383 in you fbird up and running this summer. Remember I said last winter that I wanted to race you!! You still haven't got that puppy going... You know if you had of put the 7730 ecm in place of the 165 and let me tune that puppy, you'd be racing it by now. You might not be the 11 sec car you think it was but youd be in the 12s easy... Im not the best tuner around by far but I sure know how to dial in a speed density system with $8D or $59. I literly cringed when you said you ditched the efi for a carbed set up because it wasent dialed in right. You know me, im set in my ways with efi just like some are with carbs.

Congratz and great work.
One of the quickest cars I've ever been in was back in the late 80's a 2.8 MPFI that was stripped out-- it was barely more than a shell with and engine and two seats, but it freakin flew.

Thanks! The lil engine is a good one. Defintly can take a pounding and just laugh it off. I think the only reason im stuck wanting to continue running these engines is just because I see the abuse the stock engine can take as long as you don't intentially screw up the tune and kill it. For a poor racer, this is a good engine to play with and get somewhat respectable times out of.

Definitly thought about it. Actually a few times I almost did get one..lol But right now im just so fixated on V6's that id rather go 3500 instead if I start to really mess with other engines.

Naa im stuck on the V6's. If anything I want a 3500 build like mars. I think that a 10 second V6 would be more fun to take around town and to the strip then a 9 sec V8.

Im off to the track tomorrow. Gonna drive my buddies high 11 sec stang once then my Camaro after that. Hope to get some good solid datalogs on Friday as its test and tune.

Just may run the 2 step!! 2800rpms should do

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

If you look into the stickys on the V6 board. I have a thread on there called Turbo build by fasteddi. It has alot of pics and such. Some of the stuffs from my budget build last year that got me into the 13's but there some new stuff on there too.

Thanks for the compliments fellas. I dont think the cars gonna go to much faster this year because i dont wana wound the engine. I have some good plans for over the winter . Just like in the past the winter is the time to work the car and summer is the time to race it. So i dont like down time on it in the summer. I went from 17's to 14's to 13's to 12's now so over the winter with some more mods to comliment the set up mabey next year i can aim for low low 12's. My cam is small, the converter suxs, the heads need some work on springs and such, and so one. There alot to be tweaked to make the car have a beautiful tq curve. Right now its really bad even when it makes 12.90 passes.

The main reason its so hard for me to really want much lower ets in general is because im working with a old designed iron headed V6. I intend to keep it that way to. I had a friend last weekend offer a 350 to me minus the trans and intake stuff. I though about it then when i drove the car home from the track and could do 30 mph sideways burnouts i rethought the idea. What i have with this V6 is rare and just unique. I dont want to take that away from this car so if someday i go V8 and look for some really fast times....it will be in a different car then this one. This one will have a V6 till death and probly a slower one compared to V8s but i tell you what, its just a plain old fun car to drive at the track and the streets.

So damn right imho... also might be a at least a bit lighter than a V8, maybe get more mpg if you care about that, too.

+1 on the SFCs my cars need some too

yea car weighs in at 3000 even as of last weekend. 3180 race weight with me.

I get a solid 25 MPG on a recent 300 mile fill up. Not bad for a old thirdgen.

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

that's 30 mpg on the highway or what? impressive either way for a 3.1 .. even more so if it's got a 3k stall and is warmed over, tho i haven't looked at the build thread yet to find out exactly about mods.
the stock 3.1 gets like what, 25 at max?
is your tune in the stoich range for cruise? might be running a little lean except for when the boost comes on so that would make it get a little more milage out

mines also turbocharged , 9.0-1 cr ,4k stall/700r4 , 4:10 rear gear , ported heads/intake lightened rotating assembly , setup for a lean cruise will knock down 30-33mpg highway typically depending on how u drive it , if u start getting intot he throttle it will go threw gas fast

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

I have it running about 15.5 at cruse areas. These engines can run pretty lean when cruising. That mpg is highway. Its hard to get good mpgs in town as i dont like to putt arround with it...lol

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

yeah well i think stock lean cruise if the V6 got that is also somewhere like 15.5:1... then again highway is just like 65 mph i guess but still nice for highway with the 3.73
get the point around town, sure.. just too much fun heh

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

Yea lean cruise mode is up there. The timing is pretty high to lean it out.

Heres a good pic of the 1.78 60ft time i pulled the other weekend. Thought Id share it as it felt like a hard launch. Its nice to pull a time like that on a somewhat mild turboed V6 with foot starts.

nice the line lock will help with keeping the rear brakes cool during a burnout , and will let u launch at a higher rpm because of that

if the track has rules like my local track had they would let camaros in on the pontiac days since the camaro is the same damn car for the most part

just stick some firebird badges on the camaro if not lol

we had guys who would put mitsu madges on there eagle talons to get in on import nights , and guys with the mitsus who would stick eagle badges on to race on the us muscle side of muscle vs import events

LOL Id go to pontiac nationals but id rather be working on the car. Funny thing is my Grand prix has went to that weekend 2 years in a row(stickers to prove it). My buddys going in his 11 sec daily driver daytona GTP. Hes trying to get me to come out and stay the weekend in the Motorhome but I just need to play with the camaro on saturday and get the tach and line lock in there. Mabey squeeze another .25-.5 psi out of it and see if it likes it..lol

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

im just jealous my truck broke down so i had to put the iroc into daily driver status , the thing was really only tuned to idle , and go wot . this altitude is screwing with me big time. no matter how lil or how much i open the throttle while cruising i get 10inches of vacum , unless i go more then 3/4 throttle then it instantly goes 0 vac right to boost.

i wanna take it to the track so bad but until the truck is fixed im not going to risk driving the iroc 250 miles to the track , just incase i break it and have to get towed 250 miles home as that wont be cheap

btw i dont know if u saw it but i got the iroc primed last weekend, gota block sand it this week and this comming weekend i take it back to my friends so we can spray 2 more coats , then this winter we will lay the base and clear after i install the 427 tt engine and cage

i didnt bother to much with the factory hood as its tweaked beyond repair , just primed it so it matched for now, but its being replaced with a 4 inch steel bolt on cowl hood

i got lucky for a while i thought i was going to need a 6inch hood to clear the 427sb i have to put in over the winter

Well yeah it is lol, but I mean it's not gutted like a race car. That's what impresses people the most. It's pretty much a full weight car like it was from the factory. Love my stock Formula rims, hood, and interior lol.

You know I'll be out there for Night Under Fire. I gotta work the main event, but I'm gonna make the time trial still. You should still come out to the Pontiac race! I'm putting mine in Street class lol. Gotta show them 4th gens what's up! The Firebird has been deadly lately, it'll run nearly dead on every pass. I've got one more practice race Wednesday, then I'm running 3 straight days for the money Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. What class is Brian running in? I would imagine the no-box class since he has slicks, but you would know better than I would.

Yea its pretty cool that you didnt gut it out. But you dont need to do that to make a car fast. Its clear anymore that so many cars are 10 and 11 sec full street cars that can be DDs. But then they dont race at the same track all the time to get kicked out for not having a cage...lol

Dave that cars looking good man! Im excited to see that puppy push into the 10s!

Me and my friend are striping down our cars this winter and getting them done up at from a friend that owns a pretty damm good resto shop. Im staying with the med metalic maui blue. His paint jobs are amazing that ive seen. But we have to do all the preping and priming first to cut cost of Hrs for him to paint it. Thankfully hes a friend of ours.

Re: Finally made it into the 12's at last!

I don't want to or need to go any faster in this car. The times its running now are perfect for Sportsman. It'll go 11.70s in fall air I bet you. Its not even tuned perfect yet. I'm running it a little rich (12.2) to help prevent detonation. But like I said, it doesn't need to go any faster. That's why I haven't touched it since I put the carb on. And sure, people go 10s and can DD their car. But how often do you see that naturally aspirated? Also like you mentioned, the cage. A caged car is not a street car to me. Imo if you run a 10 sec car, you better have a cage in it. Its stupid not to. You might think 12.0x isn't considered fast in a street car, but a lot of people at the track are impressed by it. I don't see anyone else at Norwalk running that fast on stock rims lol.
