wheel hop

I am getting wheel hop. i have the lca brackets and stock lca will low tire pressure cause this? I didn't have this problem till i changed the rear end with 4.10 gear. someone told me to put the lca at the lowest setting is this correct? i put it at the factory location. i will try to move the lca and see if that helps. don't understand why it didn't do it before the rear swap/

Re: wheel hop

Correct setting for LCARBs is to where the "frame" end of them, the front, is about ½" - ¾" above the "rear" end.

These cars wheel hop RUTHLESSLY in factory geometry. It's just WRONG, no 2 ways about it. Lowering, whether intentional or just sagging from old age, makes it worse.

Most likely the reason it didn't do it before was because there wasn't enough torque to the wheels with your 2.73s or whatever. Higher ratio gears increase that.

What Sofa said, plus since you still have the stock LCA, the bushings are probably worn out and the stock pieces are prone to flexing.

Fix the angle like he said, and then get a set of founders LCAs. (or brand of choice)

Re: wheel hop

Doesn't have to be the "lowest"; just, get it to where the rear is closer to the ground than the front.

If it's TOO low, it'll start wheel-hopping when you brake hard; and if your rear brakes work (i.e. if they're not the cast-iron caliper discs) you won't like that very much either.

Re: wheel hop

Yes they are the cast disc. I put them on there figure it was better then the drum brakes I had. What is wrong with the cast calipers?

Re: wheel hop

When was the last time you changed their pads?

Quite a while, eh??

Don't you suppose that if they were actually EVER DOING ANYTHING AT ALL, they might wear out, and you'd have to change them?

I've known people with those brakes that have actually driven them FOR YEARS with rust building up on the rotors, because the pads never touched them. Other people who will put their car up on jack stands under the axle tubes, put it in gear, and no matter how hard they mash the pedal, the rear wheels keep on turning. Go ahead, try it yourself.

That system was terrible. It is not "self-adjusting", like the fronts are, because of the parking brake. Rather, the act of using the parking brake adjusts them, and more importantly, the lack of the act of using the parking brake, fails to adjust them. If you don't use the parking brake EVERY SINGLE TIME you get out of the car, and at least twice on Sundays just for good measure, the pads fail to EVER contact the rotors.

So I guess if you have those, you can put the LCARBs anywhere you want, because they don't and won't ever do anything anyway. You don't have to worry about rear wheel-hop under braking, since you have no rear brakes.

Re: wheel hop

I just installed the rear end I noticed the drum brakes seemed to stop a little better. I guess that's why it was cheap. That's scary if they are not working at all. what should I do?

Re: wheel hop

Put a rear with better brakes on it. Yes 4th gen brakes are MUCH better. The LT1 era (93-97) ones are more or less a bolt-on.

Some people however, have been able to get them to work, by getting new (rebuilt) calipers, buying the "recall kit" for them from GM, modifying them accordingly, then modifying the proportioning valve, then as said using the parking brake EVERY SINGLE TIME they get out of the car, and twice (or maybe even 3 times) on Sundays just for good measure.

Me, I'm too lazy for all that. I prefer to get a half decent modern brake system and use that instead.

You shoulda ASKED on here BEFORE buying that other, instead of AFTER. Unfortunately that's something we see around here all too often, with all manner of things including but not limited to crappy brakes... but once bought, there's no un-buying it.

No.

You need the backing plates and parking brake cables too.

Eeeeeezy to put on though; pop the axles out, 4 bolts a side, done. Not positive about the parking brake in your year car but I believe that combo will work.

They'll fit your wheels.
