Double check my cam swap list?

I am trying to get my list together and a more accurate budget in place before I buy anything. Thanks for any help

Stock 87 Iroc with L98. So far just a 3inch SLP cat back, with plans for Dyno Don headers after the cam swap, and then a set of better runners. I know I know why cam first you ask. I have a very small headgasket leak and have to pull everything apart so while I am down that far I plan on a cam.

I'm not after anything to radical and like this cam by Lunati

Springs
With these springs

Rocker's
From what I have read it would be a good idea to go with 1.6 Ratio rockers and found these by Lunati

Would I be able to reuse my stock push rods? I do not think I can.

Does any one recommend a good timing chain kit?

I have read about screw in studs but I am unsure about them.

Hopefully this cam is not to big to need bigger injectors or more fuel pressure.

I am forgetting something but right now am drawing a blank, let me know if I missed something.

Again thanks for any help.

Re: Double check my cam swap list?

I think you mean 218/228, not 288 on the duration, right? LOL. I know. I know.

First of all, that's not a bad cam. I'd do just the cam, no lifters. Basically a GM hotcam with better lobes and ever so slightly less lift, assuming you keep the stock 1.5 ratio rockers, which I would. Here's my thinking. First of all, let's be honest, until you change heads, you're only gonna see "so much" in terms of performance. Don't get me wrong, you'll notice the cam and exhaust, but the real payoff is when you get those heads. If you're gonna keep 'em for now, but do the cam since you're gonna be in there anyway, keep it simple, basic, and cheap. I'd do stock GM roller lifters, (not LS7s), because they're cheap, and you can reuse your stock pushrods, stock rockers, stock press in studs etc. etc. LS7 lifters are good, but I think, notice I say "think", they're slightly different height, meaning ya gotta measure for new pushrods. I wouldn't bother. In fact i did a similar swap, and I re-used my stock lifters, although I'm not sure that's recommended. Keeping your stock rockers saves money, AND, with only .503" lift, you should be fine with press in studs. Again, would even a 1.5 RR reduce friction and flexing, and add some ponies? -sure....but budget and simplicity, in my opinion are more valuable. But to each his own. ...and with 1.6 rockers, now you start to get into problems with those studs as lift get's close to .540, and the heads and intake are gonna hold back any real performance anyhow.

...think about it this way, you'll pick up some power, get a nice exhaust note, and it won't cost ya too much. When the budget allows, and you're doing heads and intake too, then get all new valvetrain for sure.

Re: Double check my cam swap list?

Oh yeah, you WILL need springs. .....when I had my stock heads off, I had the local machine shop go through and clean em real well. I told him I needed springs for "x" amount of lift for a street driven, lower RPM TPI motor, and budget and reliability were my main concern. I think my bill was under $150 for both heads. springs, cleaning and rebuild.

I don't think you'll need any adjustment in fueling although.....an adjustable regulator is real cheap and easy, so do that. I did, but really didn't NEED to...and, ideally you'll want a tune too. My 89 handled my zz4 cam- (208/218 .478" .510" 112) without needing a tune, with regard to idle/drive quality and emissions. I actually passed down here in NC on the stock tune. I can't say your 87 will be ok, although being a MAF car (85-89), I'd imagine there's a lot of flexibility. Still, I think 87 was technically a different tune so I can't swear to that.

I plan on tune after to try and max power. On the 288 part, that is copied straight from lunati's site probably a typo on their part.

I will like replace springs and rockers most likely depends on condition when I pull I cover off.

Re: Double check my cam swap list?

Yeah, no way you have a spread of 70* of duration. ....I checked the cam only page for that part number and it was 218/228.

FYI, if you DO buy lifters, keep in mind that those kits appear to have linkbar/retro lifters for blocks not machined for roller lifters. Your 87 should be all set up for stock roller lifter which don't have expensive linkbars. I imagine you COULD use them....I think....but you don't need to. I'm actually getting a custom grind voodoo cam, for an older block, so i DO need those linkbar lifters, but to my knowledge, if you have a stock 87, you do NOT need them.

Figured a typo on 288, and from what I have gathered cam with stock replacement lifters, 1.5 RR rocks and the springs mentioned above will all work.
