Change the rear end/gear ratio will get you the biggest seat of pants improment for your money.
You can buy a complete rear end for $100-300, it only takes a couple of hours to swap whole rear ends.
Your car came with a 2.73 rear gear. Go to a 3.42 or 3.73 and it will feel like you added a supercharger to the car lol
One of the test I remember reading was car craft. They took a mustang with a 5.0L engine and done some testing/swapping.
Car had 2.80 gear ratio. Ran 14.921 @ 96.02 in 1/4 mile
Swapped in 3.25 gears and ran 14.276 @ 97.32
Shaving over .6 seconds off your ET is a BIG gain that you will feel

A torque converter upgrade is some real bang for the buck on an auto trans car.
Ideally, a 9.5" 2800 rpm stall unit like this: http://www.edgeracingconverters.com/...ions-p-35.html
Or, for about 1/3 the cost and still getting at least half of that performance boost, consider this: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/c...converter,8668
Don't let anyone talk you into more than the 2800 stall on a TPI street setup, unless you're only interested in 60' and 1/4 miles times, and running slicks or drag radials.

Yea! I didn't care for the generalization of the post.
