Okay so, replaced the ignition on my 82 Camaro, I get absolutely nothing when I turn the key over. Battery's fine, I was using jumper cables from my Jetta as well go be safe. Anyway a. Turned the key to the run position, and tried jumping the starter. Starter turns, but won't engage. Any ideas?

Update: it is a manual transmission, and yes I pushed the clutch to the floor.

Re: Starter

Have you checked if you're getting power to the starter solenoid? Need an assistant to turn the key while someone checks. Or turn the headlights on and see if they dim while turning key to crank.

Any aftermarket alarm stuff or kill switches? Did you just buy the car or just stopped working one day?

When you jump the starter it just turns but doesn't engage engine? That could be a bad ground, all your connections are tight (battery, engine - chassis, at starter terminals)?

Re: Starter

I'm getting power, headlights dim when I turn the key. No aftermarket alarms or security. I bought it out of a storage locker sale. Yes, turns but won't engage the flywheel. Yes, all connections are right as far as I know.

Re: Starter

Sounds like you need a new starter. Have you tried banging it with a hammer?

Bought the starter from a storage locker sale? is it for 153 or 168 flywheel?

Re: Starter

Bought the entire car from a storage locker sale. Update though. Hit the solenoid with a hammer, entire thing fell apart. Went to auto zone, turned that one in for a core fee.. Came it with spending only $22 on a new starter. I got one for a 92 305 5.0l.. It's the one that came off, and I completely understand why. That 30 pound starter for the 350.. Holy crap man. Anyways, next problem. I have jumper wires going from my Jetta, current daily driver, has a 280 amp alt, as well as a 110v charger/jumper. When I go to crank it.. It simply sounds like it isn't getting enough power. Another thing I noticed though.. I'm currently being grounded by a single 4 gauge wire.. And a single 14 gauge wire. So I'm thinking maybe grounds are absolutely garbage? Because the 4 gauge was being ground to an painted alternator bracket, so that in itself is garbage. Ideas?

Re: Starter

Pretty sure I'm shorting out somewhere. I'm going to pull the motor and tranny, clean everything up, actually get a good look at everything and go from there. I'm almost completely positive I'm shorting somewhere, and I can't figure it out.
