TH200C lockup

My 82ta has the stock th200c.
Although car has gone into engine modification from crossfire to carb engine remains the same the old LU5.
4 months ago decided to repair transmission. Installed ATP PLUS master rebuilt kit, a new governor and now have bought a new GM old stock TCC clutch sollenoid to replace old one because trans does not unlock after 2nd gear.
The odd while driving is transmission stack in 2nd gear while in auto.
This has to do with the fact that TH200C trannies had been designed to lock in 2nd gear or is due a stuck valve inside valve body?
This TCC clutch connects to gas and brake pedal too to dissconect when press?

Re: TH200C lockup

Kat,

The TCC solenoid should be connected through the brake pedal switch so it drops whenever the brake is depressed.

The ECM controls the TCC based upon the TPS and vacuum (MAP) sensor inputs, so be certain the TPS is adjusted correctly and MAP has a good vacuum connection.

There may also be a top gear switch in the transmission and a temperature switch in the trans to control lockup.

Re: TH200C lockup

Car has carb. Computer is off. TH200C does not mean it is controlled by computer.
TCC plug was not connected to trans but this did not prevent trans from lock up in 2nd gear.
So if it is unplugged what is causing locking up (maybe TCC is not disconnected 100% with plug OFF)?
Locking up in 2nd gear is inevitable 'cause trans is designed that way? RIGHT or WRONG???
A disconnected TCC sollenoid means transmission will never lock up unless it is plugged in? RIGHT or WRONG???

If i replace my TH200C valve body assembly with a 1979 TH200 (No Lock up) but my torque converter remains lock up
will my trans behave 100% as a non lock up or still neeeds more to be done so that trans will not lock up?

Also claims for overheating trans and disable it; with a no lock TH200; are eventually true?

Re: TH200C lockup

Pardon my confusion, but by 1982 U.S. domestic models used a solenoid controlled by the ECM to apply the TCC. If your vehicle was originally a U.S. model this would still apply. If your vehicle was an export model it may not use the CCC to control the TCC but would use a vacuum switch instead, much like the earlier U.S. models.

These earlier models used a line pressure governor in the trans to apply the TCC through a valve spool, but this scheme still used a solenoid to disengage the TCC when brakes are applied or the engine vacuum switch is open.

If your converter clutch is locking up without the electrical connector installed there may be a valve problem or leaking mainshaft seal allowing oil pressure to the TC clutch when it should not be applied.

As for overheating, the TH200 was designed to operate without a locking converter. It may run warmer due to converter heat if a TCC is not used, but the transmission was designed to tolerate it so long as a sufficient trans oil cooler is installed.

Re: TH200C lockup

Thank you very much for your valuable info.
Unfortunately car has been downgraded to carb and tcc had been disconnected.
Still is it possible to make tcc operate using TPS and VaC sensors based on carb and not EMS?
I know Th200c can still work without ems signal.

All seals have been replaced with new.Even a valve body repair kit.
How can i make th200c operate with a carb without ems?
These TPS and brake Sensors exist or need to buy?

Re: TH200C lockup

If you do not have an ECM, there will be no TPS needed. The TCC can be operated via a vacuum switch wired in series with a N.C. brake pedal switch (or relay wired to simulate the switch) and a 4th gear switch on the valve body. Many early TH350C and TH200C installations were done this way in cars and trucks.

Where is the vacuum switch and how can i check if stock works and buy another?
This switch will lock up converter each time i change gear?

The vehicle did not use a vacuum switch originally. The ECM which controlled the CFI systems also operated the TCC. If the ECM has been removed you will have to install and wire a separate vacuum switch. A vacuum switch can be purchased from many sources, such as this http://www.jegs.com/i/TCI/890/376600/10002/-1 or this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/tci-376600/overview/ or this https://www.amazon.com/Superior-Univ.../dp/B00BZODN9A

The diagram above (courtesy of Twisted_Metal) shows the scheme.

If the trans has a 4th gear switch it will allow TCC lock only in 4th. If there is no 4th gear pressure switch after valve body replacement the switch may need to be added to your earlier valve body.

And the N.C. brake switch (or relay) will also need to be connected as shown.

Re: TH200C lockup

Dear Vader.
I have bought a used vaccum switch restored as possible as i could to use as part of my hood scoop setup. Vaccum line connects to maniforld vaccum. If i want to re enable TH200C lockup can i use same vaccum switch and same vacc line with manifold vaccum?
What parts i will need for TH200 lockup?

1.TCC sollenoid?
2. Vaccum line?
3. Vaccum switch

My th200c does not have a 4th gear (this is the OVERDRIVE??)
Then which gear will my torgue converter lock up?
Others?

Re: TH200C lockup

TransGo has an upgraded TCC valve (200-LU) for the early TH-200C trans (non-overdrive) designed to correct early lockup and failure to release. That relies heavily on the trans pump being intact (no internal leaks) and the control orifice in the pump being clean. Installation required removal of the trans and front pump.

That only solves the "no-release" or "early lockup" issues and does not address the actuation of the TCC, usually via a vacuum switch for older installations. If you want to get really clever, the high gear switch on the right side of the trans (may be present) can be wired into the circuit so that lockup only occurs in final drive.
