460778 - 1978-79 305. 2 bolt mains. Found in cars and trucks.

460777 - 1976-1979 305. 2 bolt mains. Found in cars.

Casting numbers don't mean much. The same casting can be used over a number of years and in many different types and models of vehicles. A 305 in a 1976 truck won't have the same specs as a 305 in a 1979 Camaro.

If you don't mind the 2-piece rear main seal, look for an 010 block. (last 3 digits in the casting number). These are the most popular 4" bore blocks. They were used in 327's and a lot of 350's. They can be 2 or 4 bolt mains. The 010 block is a stronger, high nickle block.

I've broken a few of them. If I was building another SBC, that's the casting I go looking for. They're easy to find in pickups.

Once you have a block, the HP rating all depends on the parts you put into it. Just because an engine is rated at 140 HP doesn't mean that's what you have to live with. A simple cam and intake swap increases HP and torque.

i've never done a cam before.....gotta wait till next summer...
but i do have a quadrajet and a performer intake.....
sooo...........really all i'm concerned about is having more of a "pull" than my 84 monte does with a 305.......

i dont car about top end too much....i like that down low.....
