Modded 4.6 GT VS. Built 355
My brother has a 96 GT 5 spd. with Bassani exhaust (still has cats I think), K&N CAI, 75mm throttle body, an SCT X4 programmer w/ a dyno tune, stage two clutch, and lowering springs . He can do 130+ so I'm not sure if its stock gearing or not. Stock 96 GT is 215hp and 286 tq. I have a 700r4 (3.73 gears? ~5000rpm @ 115mph), built 5.7 all steel, ported heads, a cam that is just barely bigger than stock, true duals with glass packs and a MSD box. I didn't build engine so I don't know a lot about it but it should be at least 350hp. Anyone want to guess on who would win in straight line for about a mile? Pretty sure I got him easily unless we're topped out, but he does have a lot of mods.

I wouldn't race unless I knew what I had.
96-98 GTs are pretty slow. I know, because Ive raced a stock one in my RS and it was neck and neck. With cams and full exhaust they still only make abt 230 HP. With gears and a 5 spd he will always be in his powerband though.
You dont know what heads / carb/ cam / intake you have??
If its a smogger 355 rebuild I wouldn't race him.

No smog whatsoever, I don't even have an AC compressor lol. Edelbrock 500cfm carb and Edelbrock intake. It's built with some power cause I can smoke wider than stock tires into 3rd gear if I so choose.

As for the heads, they look stock but I'm pretty sure they are ported. Previous owner said the build cost 4 grand.

500 cfm edelbrock?
It sounds like you probably have a rebuilt L98 and a mild street cam. Without knowing the head casting number, there is no way to tell though. You should pull off one of the valve covers and look at the casting number. It would kill me to not know what heads are on there. Are they center bolt or perimeter valve covers? Might have gotten lucky and got a nice set of camel hump heads or even better-a set of vortec heads. If you have any kind of performance head, then a 500 cfm edelbrock is too small of a carburetor. As far as what cam you have, your best bet is to check the timing. If it runs best at around 12-15 base timing and has a smooth idle you probably have a stock cam or a mild street cam. If there is any lope at 12* initial timing then you have a little wilder cam. A stock L98 cam has a really smooth, soft idle with no lope whatsoever. Unless, the timing is way retarded, then it will sound like a big cam.
It doesnt take much to beat a 215 hp 4.6 L GT and any milder built carbed 350 should easily take the win as long as you get traction and have proper gearing. Mod for mod there is no contest.
A milder 355 with vortec heads , a RPM style intake, a 600 cfm carb and a hotcam mated to a 5spd and some gears, should easily beat even the later mustangs with 300 hp and even SRT8 cars. Ive heard around here they push around 400 hp. But if its tbi heads or l98 heads , it might be a different story.

I'll have to double check my carb, it was either a 500 or a 600. The valve covers are not the old school center bolt ones. I have a receipt for the cam that I'll look for tomorrow. You can hear my cam better than my parents stock Suburban so that's something lol.

The center bolt valve covers are like late 80s until the end of the 1st gen SBC in the later 90s. If you dont have the center bolt and have the perimeter bolt valve covers you most definitely have older heads on there, which still may not be a bad thing!
Just take off the four bolts and get a flashlight and let us know what heads are under there!! Now youre making me really wonder. And the governor in the 700r4 will not let you go past 130+.
Loudness of a exhaust does not indicate a big cam either
What year camaro is this?

Its an 85 but I have no idea where the engine came from as the 350 wasn't even an option in 85. Should be able to check the heads tomorrow as I don't work on Fridays.

400 hp 383 TPI in a G-van?
....why TPI, why G Van and what were you doing going that fast in that thing anyway? Just to say you did it?........
I like it!
All I remember is when I tried going that speed around 125 or so my old 89 formula 350 would start bucking badly. I read somewhere the governor prevents it. Im sure removal of the governor should yield 150+ mph but i have no real reason to go that fast because by 80-100 mph in a street race i already know if i won or lost. Gets to a certain point in which i begin to endanger my life and other people around me.

I converted it to TPI for torque when I had a 305 in it , then went to 350 with vortec heads, edelbrock base with alot of porting, siamessed SLP runners. When I melted a piston I went to a 10.5:1 383.
I only open them up on long empty section of highway. Basically just wanted to see what it would do. My 2006 Ram making about 370 RWHP would run somewhere in the 155-160 mph range and my 2012 Titan making about 340 RWHP would burry the 140 mph speedo and climb another 1,000 rpm.

Update: The race finally happened and the 355 won. It wasn't a blowout by any means but it was pretty clear who won. Take it as you want considering my build is unknown.
