2.8 turbo question

As the title states, I have a 2.8 with a turbo and have a question. The turbo is an IHI RHB5 and started leaking oil so the car now smokes periodically. I would like to keep things simple and just change the center cartridge, but can't seem to find the same spec. My question is would any spec RHB5 center cartridge work? I'm new to turbos and really just want my car back on the road as easy as possible.

i hate to be the bearer of bad news but that turbo really is much to tiny for even a stock 2.8 , chances are u oversped the turbo and it took out the seals

this turbo would be a big upgrade to what u have for slightly more then the cost of a rebuilt kit , and much less the cost of a new center section

http://www.ebay.com/itm/T3-T4-T04E-T...1RsQyV&vxp=mtr

even that turbo is slightly undersized
this is the turbo most of us will run

that first t3/t4 turbo i listed can also be purchased with an internal wastegate for slightly more money if ur not using an external wastegate

Re: 2.8 turbo question

Thanks for the quick reply. Are those turbos physically much bigger than what I have? My turbo is in a pretty tight spot. Also, would I have to upgrade my injectors for either one of those turbos? It has 19 lb injectors now. My current turbo has an internal waste gate so I would probably try to stick with that setup as well.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

u could get by for now with that first turbo and 19# injectors , u would really want something like 24-30 pound injectors though with the stock engine and that turbo

the compressor housing will be about 2 inches larger in diam then the one u have now
got any pictures were u turbo is

also the turbos use a t3 flange , so u may have to cut the flange off ur pipe and weld a new one on i forget what flange that ihi turbo uses

Re: 2.8 turbo question

Wow your using 19lbs injectors? Stock fuel pressure? Your afrs are ok under boost?

Yea those turbos are physically larger. But upgrading would help alot. Just not to make it faster bit also to make your next turbo last alot longer from not being undersized and over spinning.

How much much boost were you running?

I ran both of hose turbos he linked for you. I suggest the gt3582r all day. Perfect size for most people's v6 set up on here. My gt3582r lasted 3 years till something went though the turbine. My guess wire from mig welding.

There are cheep turbos out there that also have the internal wastegate as well. Just try and fine something with a 54mm+ minor inducer.

Its on the small end but bigger then what you have.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

This setup is actually on a 2.8 Fiero so not as much room to work with. It is a Design One/Miller Woods setup. It's running 7 psi. I'm not sure what the air fuel is, I don't have a gauge for that yet (it's on the to do list). Picture isn't my engine but the same setup.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

you look on ebay for a rebuild kit? a quick search pulled up several compete turbochargers but I am not sure if they are compatible or a true bolt on. take a look at the exhaust housing and see if it matches up with your bolt pattern on your turbo.

I remember coming across a site a while back that you could get these turbos rebuilt and an option was an upgraded comp wheel too.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

Thanks to everyone for their advice and replies so far. I have looked on ebay, but can't find an RHB5 with the same spec as mine. If I knew the center cartridge from all RHB5s where interchangeable, I would probably just do that. However, I haven't been able to find out if that is possible. And with the advice that a bigger turbo would be better, I'm kind of thinking about just doing that. Project89 said I should have 24-30 lb injectors, what cars do I get them from? I currently have Mustang 19 lb injectors.

If you get a bigger turbo at all get 36lbs injectors at the minimum. And I would suggest a afr guage kit so you don't blow up the car. Better safe then sorry. Thankfully you don't really make too much power to wound the car if you went too lean.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

just search ebay for 36# injectors , if the motors fully stock u could get by on 24 or 30's though

if u can find an lt1 in the junkyard they have 24# injectors

24's will suport roughly 240 hp and 30's will support roughly 300

Re: 2.8 turbo question

The motor is completely stock with less than 60,000 miles. I'm going to look at the previously listed turbos and do some measuring to make sure that I have room in my engine bay.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

Still haven't got the car back on the road. I have another quick question. Do all RHB5 4 bolt mounted turbos have the same mounting bracket? Meaning will a VJ11 bolt up to a VJ14? I can't find any answers searching the internet. Any help is appreciated.

Re: 2.8 turbo question

a simple google image search should turn up whether or not the flanges are the same on the exhaust.

if you aren't sure, buy an inlet gasket and downpipe gasket and compare to what you already have. the gaskets are cheaper than ordering the wrong turbo by accident.

or just find a turbo rebuilder and have them rebuild it. you will prob have to ship it out to have it reubilt.
