how hard is it to install one of these? is something i can do in my garage on a sunday afternoon or is it something that needs to be taken to a shop to make sure the gears are all straight and at the right angle?

For that price I don't care how hard it is to install. Now if only 3.73 gears would go onsale. Oh yeah, Summit is giving all thirdgen members a 10% discount and I already need to get a hood...hmm...

Its something that needs to be taken to a shop, especially if you're changing the gears. If you dont get it setup just right, it will whine and possibly break.

well, i do a lot of gears and as long as NONE OF YOU ARE CHANGING GEARS...JUST POSI it isn't that hard. just make sure you get the right backlash with a dial indicator....with a used gear should be around .010 to .012 and make sure you get a good contact pattern.

note: when going from to a posi from an open....you always need to change the side shims...doesn't stay the same.

also note: if you plan to change the gears too, i wouldn't. you need to set pinion depth with a tool.

Since my car has a 3:73 posi already does this mean I can just install this unit with
the same gears, check the backlash and be ready to go ? I know I still need to obtain
a pair of 28 spline axels since the car is an
84.

The Zexel-Torsen unit has held up rather nicely in my car. Because this unit is only for 28-spline axles, I had to replace my stock 26-spline. I went with Moser Engineering axles. They are 30 percent stronger than GM pieces and they were only $225/pair. GM wants more than that for ONE 28-spline axle.

It shouldnt cost $500, and there is NO way you can do this yourself, unless you are an experienced professional. Like I said in my first post, this is something critical that needs to be done by a professional. You need certain tools that most people dont have, and you need the experience to do it right. Otherwise your new gears will whine all the time, and could even break. If you cant afford to do the job right, dont do the job at all...

kevin is right, to a degree, if you're competant and can follow the directions you can change the gears at home. i've changed a lot of gear sets for a lot of people and haven't had any problems. the biggest hold up is it requires tools most peopel don't have at home.

Ordered mine today. SLP stated that today
was the last day.
Willie when you ordered the axles did you get
them directly from Moser or did you order
through Summit or Jegs ? That price seems
pretty good.....

As far as the tools are concerned, to do the job right you would need a dial indicator to measure backlash, a depth gauge to set the pinion depth, an inch pound needle type torque wrench to set the bearing preload, and various foot pound torque wrenches to tighten other bolts like ring gear to carrier and bearing caps. It's also nice to have a micrometer to measure the thickness of your shims.
I've set up many a gear with good results using these tools and I don't consider myself to be a "professional" mechanic.

I know the HD Torsen is better, but will I see a difference between it and the standard torsen? Have a '95 rear under my '86 IROC now, with standard posi and 2.73's (yuck!)and want to upgrade. Motor will be a 383 or blown 355, around 450 HP I guess. I will change to aftermarket axles and cover in the future. Since there is a $200+ difference in price right now, should I hold out and wait for the HD or buy now?
