Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

In the process of building up my 406, i bought a set of iron eagle 215 heads. I'm finally trying to get around to finishing the engine up, and was looking at the heads again.

according to darts website, the 215 platinums have 2.05/1.60 valves. Now, when i got these heads, i got them from racepartsdirect and they assembled bare castings for me. In my paperwork from them, it says they assembled the heads with 2.02/1.60 valves.

What implications does this have ? I wish I had noticed it at the time i bought them, but i just didn't.

Also, does anyone know the flow numbers for these heads, I have found 2 different sets, and they are really different. theres one set here
http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/te...test/dart.html

and another set here
http://racingfeed.com/downloads/chevy_flow_data.pdf

I tend to believe the CHP numbers, but im not sure where this difference is coming from.

Any input on this would be appreciated.

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

The only thing that matters is how much your heads flow.
So, flow test your heads. If your heads do in fact have a 2.02" valve, they won't flow the same anyways.
It's easy to manipulate the flow with the actual valve job.
The radius on the port entry will effect the flow numbers. if 1 head uses a 1/2" radius and another uses a 1" radius on the port entry, the numbers are not comparable. (test method)

It doesn't take a lot, to tune up your heads with a little hand work to kick up the out of the box flow. If the performance of your motor really matters,
you should be looking at this. Not fussing over different numbers on the internet that are not your numbers. In my limited experience with Dart heads, the quality is good, they don;t flow what they say they flow. Not hard to fix and go beyond for more real power. You need to start with a flow test of 1 intake port of your heads.

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

Right now I'm just trying to get a base line so that I can estimate my torque curve and choose the right torque converter, or make the decision to take the hard route and switch to a manual transmission.

Would it be a general assumption that, all other things the same, a smaller valve will flow less than the larger valve ?

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

Have you actually measured the valves? Just a thought, but maybe the 2.02 that was on your paperwork was a typo or just a mistake.

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

Honestly, thats what I'm hoping for. I havent had the chance to measure them yet though, the heads are in a buddy's garage along with the rest of my engine due to a lack of room in my current apartment.

--- Just got word back from my head builder. They said that they put 2.02 down on the bill sheet for all SBC, but indeed mine are 2.05. Thats a relief.

I still need flow numbers if anyone has got better data than what i already linked.

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

This reminds me of my heads, they are advertised as 215cc runners everywhere online, but when I recieved them, the sheet specified 210cc, A little harder to measure the intake volume to know for sure, but I'm not sweating it.

Re: Iron Eagle 215 platinum questions

If you list the induction cam and exhaust, trans, vehicle and rear gear ratio and how you plan to use it, I can help you select the right converter for your 406.
Small differences in cylinder head flow won;t change the torque converter choice.
