if you have an airbag still doable but more money obviously. i saw that grant came out with new wheels you can use with an airbag for some vehicles. other than that, steering wheel puller, steering wheel and the adapter piece, all bolt on, really easy.
I put an aftermarket wheel in my 91 and it was cake. Unscrew the airbag from the back of the wheel, then disconnect it. I ended up just cutting the harness for it. Then I pulled the old wheel just like normal and installed the new one just like any other wheel would be. Simple as that. Just be VERY cautious working with the airbag. My battery was dead in the car so I didnt have to disconnect it. Otherwise I would have.
thanks - the last owner put it on, but i know just where he got it cuz i saw the same wheel at autozone for like 40 bucks. it almost failed inpection last year cuz he never hooked the horn back to it, so the horn works off the button you see to the left of the wheel. he also had it mounted funny when i first got it, felt like i was in nascar cuz it always looked like i was turning left!!!! - that's all straight now
I put a Grant GT wheel from Autozone in my 91 RS a little while back and its really easy. I also nabbed a replacement horn button with a Chevy logo and an install kit too. Removing the airbag will most likely throw a code and the INFL REST light will come on and stay on. I just poped out the cluster and pulled the bulb and viola, problem solved. If you have access to a code scanner, I'm sure you can just clear the code too. Just be sure to discon the battery before attempting to pull the airbag. I let mine sit for a few hours just to be sure there wasnt any sort of residual charge in the system. I also unplugged the sensor at the bottom of the column, under the dash. Heres an old pic (gauges have been replaced with Autometer Ultralite II's in custom panel).

Travis401--Thats a nice looking wheel. Flows well with the look of the car.
Stunt double--Not really a fan of your old school wheel but to each his own.
seriously (travis401) sweet wheel man. I'm debating removing my airbag since it's been messed up or something and my horn doesn;t work, but as far as insurance goes i get a discount for airbags so it's a constant debate: fix it or mod it? Where were you able to find that horn button?
if the insurance company doesnt do a visual inspect, you can still get the discount since it came from the factory with the air bag. and the horn button was on the shelf right below the wheels at auto zone. i was just lucky enough to look down and see it. they had the red bowtie, one that said ford and another one, but i hevent ever seen the horn buttons there since. im sure you can track one down, its made by grant as a direct replacement and uses the came connections as the one that comes with the wheel.
If you look on the back of the box the wheel is in, it says what installation kit you'll need for your vehicle. They're usually kept around the same area as the wheels. You will need and instillation kit and steering wheel puller to swap out your wheel. I had a 14" chrome version of that wheel on my car for a while, but just didnt like the way it looks. But a 13" - 14" wheel is what you'll want to get. Why you'd buy it online I dunno, just go down to an Autozone or Schucks or maybe even Walmart and avoid the shipping and the wait, and have the ability to take it back if you don't like the way it looks when you put it in. Its not like you're gonna pay anymore by buying in a store.
Travis401, That is one nice looking wheel. The leather is worn on the top of my 91 stock wheel and I want that one. Maybe with a blue bowtie as my car is blue. What size is that?
its a 13.5". grant does make a blue button with a white bowtie http://www.grantproducts.com/pc-423-...rn-button.aspx. you cant buy direct from grant, but you can atleast look up the part # and probably get autozone to order you one.
I want to remove my Grant Challenger wheel and put the stock on back on my 88 Camaro. when I get to the silver fan looking piece I can't figure out what is next. any ideas or help (with pics) would be appreciated.

You need a steering wheel puller, it will have 2 - 4 holes in it and a long shaft.
You put 2 or 3 long bolts through the puller and attach them to the 3 holes in the silver Grant adapter, while keeping the long shaft part sitting on the steering shaft. then screw the large shaft down and the adapter starts to rise and you are done.

and you can buy and probably rent them from Advance or Autozone
thanks

i was looking for grant gt steering wheel,,,, auto zone dont show the the adaptor for 91 camero rs.... bacause it had air bag,,,,, does anybody know the part# for the adaptor that would fit a 1991 camero rs ....
Get one for an 88 then. The reason no adapters exist is because it's borderline illegal to remove airbag wheels, so all wheels are marketed to 82-89 Camaros.
For the record, it IS legal to remove your own airbag. A shop cannot do it for you. I think maybe they can if they install a new one? Either way, it's a serious liability for a shop to do it, so they wont go near it.
I want to ditch my airbag wheel, but I fear getting hurt in an accident and the insurance company refusing to handle my medical bills because I got rid of the airbag. Of course you could notify them it is removed and see how they take that. Not sure if they'd just remove the discount or they'd completely flip out and refuse to insure you. I never put any shenanigans like that past an insurance company.
I remember reading some where if you do have to take off an airbag steering wheel, there are some safety precautions that need to be heeded like disconnecting the battery first and foremost. When you do get the wheel off your supposed to aim the wheel away from you just in case it decides to go off is among other safety precautions just in case something bad happens. I would be on the cautious side if you attempt this project.
Did this on my old 92 but it had a non air bag column..
Please don't slap on those wheels you see at your local Vatozone. Spend money on a good looking one. I bought the Challanger Grant style and hated it. Grip felt real cheap and foam like, I slapped on my stocker back on after a week and gave the Grant to my dad for his 89 Caprice.
There is a reason theres ones out there that cost upwards of $150 for the wheel alone.
